Position: Correctional Officer 1 (CO2), Washington State Penitentiary, Walla Walla, WA

Correctional Officer 1 (CO1) & 2 (CO2) – Washington State Penitentiary

Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) is located at 1313 North 13th Avenue Walla Walla, WA 99362.

Responsibilities
  • Provide safety and security for inmates, staff, and the general public.
  • Control, direct, and monitor the activities and movements of incarcerated individuals in accordance with department methods and procedures.
  • Maintain security of the institution and control movement into, out of, and within the institution.
  • Serve as a positive role model and use interpersonal and communication skills to assist inmates in becoming productive community members.
  • Perform duties in accordance with established policies and occupational safety standards.
  • Overtime is an essential function of this position.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Legal (constitutional) right to carry a firearm.
  • One year of experience as a Department of Corrections (DOC) Corrections and Custody Officer, including successful completion of CORE Academy and Correctional Officer Field Training Program.
  • One year of experience as a Correctional Officer in adult or juvenile corrections where security functions equivalent to DOC Corrections and Security Officer 2 were performed.
  • Pre‑employment requirements include drug testing and a psychological evaluation.
Salary Information
  • Corrections & Custody Officer 1 (TEAMSTERS Range 45 Step J-M):
    • Full‑time – $6,046 – $6,512
    • On‑call/Hourly – $34.75 – $37.43
  • Corrections & Custody Officer 2 (TEAMSTERS Range 48 Step J-M):
    • Full‑time – $6,512 – $7,013
    • On‑call/Hourly – $37.43 – $40.30
On‑Call Positions
  • Opportunity to work an average of 32‑40 hours per week, with no minimum hour guarantee.
  • On‑call staff will attend 6 weeks of full‑time paid training immediately upon hire.
  • On‑call personnel may be considered for full‑time permanent or temporary vacancies as they occur.
  • Benefits package (medical, dental, vision, retirement, paid sick leave, holiday pay, and paid vacation) is provided if at least 20 hours worked per week.

  • Salary is based on experience and determined at the time of a final offer; the salary range listed includes steps A‑M, with Step M typically reached six years after Step L in the permanent range.
