Position: Correctional Officer 1 (CO2), Washington State Penitentiary, Walla Walla, WA

Correctional Officer 1 (CO1) / 2 (CO2) – Washington State Penitentiary, Walla Walla, WA

Full‑time and on‑call positions available. Candidates will be invited to an in‑person hiring event on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 and, if selected, will attend the earliest training academy.

Salary Information

Corrections & Custody Officer 1 (TEAMSTERS Range 45, Step J‑M):

  • Full‑time: $6,046 – $6,512 per month
  • On‑call/Hourly: $34.75 – $37.43 per hour

Corrections & Custody Officer 2 (TEAMSTERS Range 48, Step J‑M):

  • Full‑time: $6,512 – $7,013 per month
  • On‑call/Hourly: $37.43 – $40.30 per hour
Responsibilities

In an adult correctional facility, Correctional Officers provide safety and security, and assist in controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movement of incarcerated individuals. This includes maintaining the security of the institution and controlling movement into, out of, and within the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures. Officers are expected to be positive role models, work with incarcerated individuals to help them become productive members of society, and use interpersonal and communication skills to correct and counteract criminal thinking while maintaining safe confinement environments for successful re‑entry into communities.

Key duties include:

  • Monitoring inmate behavior and enforcing rules.
  • Maintaining order and security within the facility.
  • Conducting routine searches and inspections.
  • Responding to emergencies, including medical and safety incidents.
  • Assisting with transfers and evacuations.
  • Providing first‑aid and emergency care as needed.
  • Serving as the official liaison between inmates and staff.
Qualifications

To qualify for the Corrections and Custody Officer 2 (CO2) level, candidates must meet one of the following:

  • One year of experience as a Department of Corrections Corrections and Custody Officer, including successful completion of CORE (Academy) and the Correctional Officer Field Training Program.
  • One year of experience as a Correctional Officer in adult or juvenile corrections where security functions equivalent to DOC Corrections and Security Officer 2 were performed.

Additional requirements for all positions include:

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • The legal right to carry a firearm.
  • Physical and mental conditioning suitable for the duties.
  • Pre‑employment drug testing and psychological evaluation.
