The Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) is an adult correctional facility operating in support of the Washington State Department of Corrections mission and the goal to improve public safety. WSP is seeking a detail focused and proactive problem solver to join their team as a Correctional Captain! The Correctional Captain is tasked with the goal of providing leadership for all other uniformed staff regardless of where they are assigned and administering and coordinating security related activities at a correctional facility level.

The WSP is comprised of 3 Close Custody Units, 4 Special Housing Units, 2 Intensive Management Units, 2 Medium Units, 2 Minimum Housing Units and a Hospital. In all, WSP houses 2,100 male incarcerated individuals and employs approximately 1,100 staff.

Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, your work will involve assuming responsibility for the interpretation of policy in the daily operations of a correctional facility with all levels of custody. You will be responsible for the administration of essential staff and support services in connection with the review of activity reports, personal conferences, and the successful operations of assigned activities.

Correctional Captains are tasked with ensuring first and second level supervisors' work is reviewed using conference and management analysis techniques. You will evaluate and make decisions concerning requests from the Lieutenant and Correctional Sergeants regarding operational areas of the institution, staff, and incarcerated individuals.

This position is required to administer and coordinate all security related activities of a principle organizational segment such as a Close Custody, Medium and Minimum-security correctional facility or serve in an administrative capacity. As an Incident Commander, you will coordinate operational procedures with the Shift Commander during all emergency responses.

• Supporting the principles of the Department’s Diversity Goals which are necessary to change the culture of the department.
• Directing the custody program at a Close custody, Medium and Maximum-security correctional facility.
• Planning, assigning, and directing shift responsibilities consistent with security and safety needs.
• Completing critical incident investigations for the Superintendent on situations affecting the safety or security of the facility, i.e. escapes, serious assaults, etc.
• Conducting audits and investigations, as required.
• Manage all aspects of security for the entire facility to include the perimeter, weapons storage and use, access/egress areas, air space, vehicle use, movement schedules of incarcerated individuals.
• Manage the following Special Teams, ensuring compliance with training and deployments:
  Emergency Response Team, Special Emergency Response Team, Inmate Recovery Team, and Sniper Team.
