Lead Substation Physical Engineer

Description

Lead Substation Physical Engineer – responsible for designing and managing substation physical projects for electric utilities at voltages ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV, utilizing digital logic design, AC/DC circuits, and detailed substation drawings.

(2‑4) days a week in the Walled Lake, MI office.

• Execute substation physical projects.
• Conduct quality control checks on design projects.
• Read and design substation physical drawings such as one‑line, three‑line, plan‑section, foundation, and grounding drawings.
• Create and verify bill of materials for substation physical work.
• Attend site visits at customer locations.
• Ensure compliance with quality control, safety, scope, schedule, and budget requirements.
• Collaborate with a design team of engineers, designers, and CAD technicians, and implement client standards.

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with eight (8+) years of substation physical design experience.
• Experience with grounding studies, lightning protection, and lighting studies.
• Excellent communication skills with internal teams and clients.
• Ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
• Collaborative team leader and effective independent worker.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• High level of computer competency.
• Willingness to travel to project and/or client sites.

• US Citizenship and ability to pass a DOE Background check.
• Engineer Intern (EI or EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
• Working knowledge of protection and control design.
• Experience with bus calculation.
• Experience with WinIGS or CDEGS.
• Master’s degree in a related field.
