Overview
The Permanent Substitute Custodian – PM position at Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is a district‑wide custodial role that ensures schools remain clean, safe, and secure in accordance with district policies and applicable codes. The custodian performs custodial duties in both secondary and elementary buildings and maintains the appearance and operational excellence of the district’s facilities.
Responsibilities- Report to the working foreman/principal in secondary buildings and to the Superintendent of Operations at all other times; assist principal/foreman as requested.
- Perform scheduled custodial work following approved procedures, including cleaning, dry sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing all areas.
- Correct minor maintenance problems and maintain building and grounds security by opening/closing the building each school day and during special events.
- Maintain neat and clean uniforms and project a positive image for the district when guests are in the building.
- Care for grounds: mow grass around the building, maintain flowers and shrubbery, remove snow and ice from walks and steps.
- Store custodial supplies and equipment in a proper and neat storage area.
- Assist in building use requests and coordinate use of school facilities by non‑school groups after regular school hours.
- Cooperate with all stakeholders in a courteous manner and report problems noted in the building.
- Have knowledge of mechanical, electrical, heating units, mechanical equipment operation and cleaning procedures.
- Maintain playground equipment in safe and good operating condition.
- Work on call as needed for emergency repairs, overtime, or special needs outside normal work hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
The custodian is responsible for keeping the assigned building(s) clean, safe, functional, and secure in accordance with prescribed codes and established district policies and standards. A custodial worker must maintain all assigned building(s) in a state of operational excellence so that they present no interruptions, distractions, or obstacles to the education program. The custodian follows approved custodial job procedures and performs duties in the care of grounds, maintains security, assists principals and building foremen, and maintains sanitary conditions of building facilities.
WorkingConditions
The work environment is predominantly indoor with occasional outdoor work in hot and cold weather. The employee climbs ladders, works near moving mechanical equipment, and may use toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is moderate and the employee must meet deadlines with severe time constraints. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Physical RequirementsStand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, lift up to 50–80 pounds, push or pull items, and perform tasks that require frequent bending, twisting, and overhead reaching. Close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus are required.
