Firefighter​/Paramedic

GENERAL DUTIES

Participates in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and the saving of life and property. Participates in the laying of hose lines, placing of ladders, ventilation of buildings, placing of fire streams and rescuing of persons. Administers primary pre‑hospital medical care to the sick and injured appropriate with certification as a Paramedic.

Operates communications equipment. Participates in the general maintenance and cleaning of quarters, apparatus and equipment. May serve on special duty at public gatherings. Attends classes in firefighting and continuing education per State mandates. May drive and operate various apparatus and motor vehicles. Work requires the performance of hazardous tasks under difficult and unpleasant conditions. Performs other related work as required.

Considerable ability to acquire and use effectively a variety of information pertaining to firefighting, fire control and fire prevention. Considerable ability to become proficient in the care and use of firefighting equipment. Good ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, superiors, vendors, agencies. Good ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions. Considerable mechanical aptitude. Considerable ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Considerable ability to think quickly and act decisively in emergency situations. Considerable agility and physical strength to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse and hazardous conditions.

Must be a high school graduate or hold a GED. Must hold a current Paramedic license that meets or exceeds the Connecticut State Regulations. Must pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Applicants must have reached their 18th birthday and be able to meet the National Fire Protection Association's 1582 Standard. Two categories of medical requirements exist:
Category A and Category

B. Category A conditions will preclude an individual from performing firefighting operations. Category B conditions must be evaluated a case‑by‑case basis to allow the Fire Department physician to determine if the medical condition would prevent that person from performing firefighting duties. Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Standards for Respiratory Protection (29 CFR ) as amended.

• CPAT CERTIFICATION:
  The Town will accept a CPAT Certification up to 12 months from its issue date. An applicant may apply and participate in the examination process; however, their name will not be certified to the Fire Department for consideration until they supply the Department of Human Resources with a valid CPAT Certification (not more than 12 months since its issue date).
• PARAMEDIC LICENSE:
  An applicant may apply and participate in the examination process if they can provide proof that they are currently enrolled in a valid paramedic program. An applicant may apply and participate in the examination process; however, their name will not be certified to the Fire Department for consideration until they supply the Department of Human Resources with a valid Paramedic License.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license. When asked by the system, you must upload a copy of your valid paramedic license OR written verification of enrollment in a valid paramedic program.
