Practitioner Role Scope

The Hartford Health Care Heart & Vascular Institute is seeking an Electrophysiology (EP) Advanced Practitioner Provider (APP) to work in a progressive and expanding program utilizing the most advanced, evidence‑based science to diagnose, manage and treat complex cardiac arrhythmias. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will work in a unique hybrid role utilizing cardiovascular expertise and demonstrating advanced understanding of cardiac electrophysiology, including complex arrhythmias, cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED), and cardiac ablations.

Keen ability to interpret ECGs, diagnose and treat cardiac rhythm disorders in both ambulatory clinic and inpatient hospital settings, supporting the central region and ensuring the highest standards of patient outcome and satisfaction. This role also includes supporting peri‑operative electrophysiology services.

Responsibilities
  • Outpatient ECG interpretation, diagnosis, management, and optimization of treatment for patients with complex cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Pre‑procedure risk stratification for cardiac EP procedures and prescribing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
  • Effectively interpret medical data and develop treatment plans in collaboration with electrophysiologists.
  • Monitor and adjust medications for complex cardiac arrhythmias; perform follow‑up assessments to ensure efficacy and optimize evidence‑based treatment plans.
  • Perform routine CIED testing and reprogramming independently or with minimal physician supervision; review, interpret and manage CIED remote transmissions.
  • Facilitate outpatient therapeutic procedures including CIED implantation (pacemakers and implantable defibrillators) and catheter ablation.
  • Provide patient education on treatment options and lifestyle modifications.
  • Act as an active member of the central region APP team supporting inpatient EP consultation services at The Hospital of Central Connecticut and Mid State Medical Center.
  • Provide EP clinical support in medical, critical care, progressive care, peri‑operative and emergency patient management.
  • Interpret ECGs, telemetry, and identify cardiac arrhythmias; recommend evidence‑based interventions independently with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate with inpatient multidisciplinary team—including cardiologists, intensivists, hospitalists, and medical staff—to facilitate cardiac arrhythmia interventions and diagnostic testing.
  • Coordinate transfer of patients requiring a higher level of care and manage inpatient implanted cardiac device interrogation in the ICU setting.
  • Initiate patient care meetings to revise the plan of care as the patient’s condition warrants.
  • Support EP peri‑operative services by providing pre‑ and post‑procedure orders, interval histories and physicals, reviewing pre‑op labs, testing and discharge instructions, and collaborating on concerning findings with the referring electrophysiologist.
  • Manage post‑operative complications and possess basic EP procedural skills; willingness to learn to independently implant loop recorders is preferred.
  • Participate in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes and continuously improve care.
  • Work in multiple locations throughout Connecticut and stay updated on electrophysiology advancements through continuing education.
