High School Music Band Teacher

Position Purpose

The High School Music Band Teacher develops students' skills, understanding, and appreciation of instrumental music. The role is responsible for creating a high-quality high school instrumental program that provides students with a strong foundation for college preparation and/or future employment. This includes identifying, promoting, and developing each student's talents in instrumental musical expression while directing group performances, rehearsals, and concerts.

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' understanding, appreciation of the art of music, including listening a wide range of musical genre, periods and styles.

To identify, promote and develop each student's talents in instrumental musical expression.

Essential Functions

Instructional & Performance Management

* Curriculum & Development:
Develops and administers a comprehensive music education curriculum consistent with school district goals, objectives, and evidence-based practices.

* Instructional Delivery:
Provides targeted instruction to continually improve band instrument skills, music theory knowledge, listening skills, and exposure to a wide range of musical genres, periods, and styles.

* Differentiated Learning:
Conducts ongoing assessment of student musical progress and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student needs, learning styles, and stages of child development (including students with special needs).

* Performance Direction:
Plans, coordinates rehearsals for, and directs students in musical programs, concerts, parades, ensembles, and community performances outside the regular classroom.

* Lesson Planning:
Develops balanced lesson plans, organizes class time efficiently for instruction and rehearsal, and utilizes a diverse repertoire of music literature.

Classroom & Department Operations

* Inventory & Asset Management:
Manages and requisitions the inventory of band instruments and departmental supplies. Oversees daily usage in the band room/stage, tracks instruments checked out to students, and coordinates necessary maintenance and repairs to keep equipment in good working order.

* Environment & Behavior:
Establishes and enforces standard procedures for behavior, maintaining order, and ensuring a safe, productive, and conducive learning atmosphere during practices, rehearsals, and performances.

* Student Records:
Organizes and maintains an accurate, complete, and correct system for record-keeping, grading, and reporting student activities, achievements, and attendance in compliance with laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.

* Communication:
Encourages parental involvement and ensures timely, effective communication regarding student progress and performance schedules.

Other Functions & Professional Responsibilities

* Extracurriculars:
Directs and organizes school activities, clubs, and other musical extracurricular activities as required.

* School Support:
Performs standard administrative support duties such as hall/cafeteria monitoring and bus loading/unloading zones as assigned.

* Collaboration:

Coordinates with other professional staff members, participates in faculty meetings, and serves on staff committees.

* Professional Growth:
Attends staff meetings, professional educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence and maintain certifications.

* Additional Duties:
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, or central office administrators.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Music Expertise:
Advanced ability to read music, play one or more band instruments, conduct students in instrumental ensemble performance, and select appropriate musical literature.

* Pedagogy & Regulation:
Deep knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, differentiated instruction, and applicable federal and state laws regarding education.

* Operational

Skills:

Ability to utilize computer network systems, data information systems, and standard school/office equipment to prepare accurate records, analyze student data, and formulate action plans.

* Interpersonal & Crisis

Skills:

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals, build effective relationships, utilize conflict resolution, and apply district-approved crisis intervention/de-escalation techniques.

* Adaptability:
Ability to independently manage a busy environment with constant interruptions, solve problems to create action plans, and adapt to changing work priorities.
