Position Purpose

The Band Director at Wallington High School is responsible for developing, directing, and maintaining a high-quality instrumental music and band program. The role aims to provide high school students with an exceptional foundation for musical expression, collegiate preparation, and/or future employment. The Band Director coordinates all rehearsals, field performances, parades, and concerts while fostering a structured, safe, and positive learning environment.

Essential Responsibilities & Functions

Pursuant to assignment, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Instructional Delivery & Performance Direction

* Ensemble Leadership:
Plans, coordinates rehearsals for, and directs students in the marching band, concert band, and other designated instrumental ensembles.

* Skill Development:
Provides targeted instruction to continually improve students' instrumental techniques, music theory comprehension, and performance skills across a wide range of musical genres and styles.

* Performance Logistics:
Schedules, organizes, and directs group performances, including half-time shows, parades, competitions, and seasonal school concerts.

* Differentiated Instruction:
Conducts ongoing assessments of student progress and adapts instructional methods to fit individual learning styles and student needs.

Program Operations & Administration

* Asset Management:
Manages the inventory of all school-owned instruments and equipment. Tracks instrument rentals/check-outs to students and coordinates routine maintenance and repairs.

* Student Supervision:
Establishes and enforces clear standards for student behavior and procedures to maintain order, safety, and a productive rehearsal atmosphere during school and extracurricular events.

* Record-Keeping:
Maintains accurate, complete, and confidential student records, including attendance, grading, and performance achievement metrics as required by district policy and NJ administrative regulations.

* Community Relations:
Communicates effectively with parents, school administrators, and community stakeholders regarding performance schedules, expectations, and student progress.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certifications, & Licenses

* Certification (Required):
Valid New Jersey Teaching Certification (e.g., Music) OR an active Bergen County Substitute Certificate.

* Transportation:
Valid driver's license or independent capability to travel to various performance venues, parades, and district buildings as required.

Experience & Desirable Traits

* Prior successful coaching or instructional leadership experience within a competitive high school band or marching program is highly desirable.

* Previous collegiate or professional instrumental playing experience is desirable.

Physical and Mental Demands

* Work Environment:
Performs duties in standard classrooms, auditoriums, and outdoor athletic stadiums/parade routes. Exposure to loud noise levels during rehearsals and performances is standard.

* Physical Metrics:
Requires standard mobility, standing for extended periods during conducting/rehearsals, fine finger dexterity for instrumentation, and the occasional ability to lift or transport musical equipment.

Salary-9125.00
