Electrical Engineer

HDR is looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services Business Group in the Walnut Creek or Folsom, CA office. This individual will be responsible for the electrical design of facilities across a variety of markets—including Technology, Corporate/Commercial, Education, Healthcare, Water/Wastewater, Municipal, Industrial, Power, and Federal. The role involves coordinating with a multidisciplinary design team throughout the project life cycle, from planning stages through construction administration, and includes developing construction drawings, specifications, engineering calculations and reviewing shop drawings.

• Perform, plan, direct and monitor work of the electrical design team on small to mid‑size institutional/industrial projects through the schematic design and contract document phases.
• Review electrical documents for conflicts with all disciplines.
• Write and edit electrical specifications and select equipment, systems, and devices.
• Assist with designs for upgrades, expansions of medium‑voltage and low‑voltage distribution, and green‑field design.
• Prepare electrical design plans and specifications per NFPA 70 requirements, covering systems such as switch gear, pumping plants, pumps, lighting, HVAC, fire protection detection and suppression panels, and other miscellaneous loads.
• Engineer physical design (above & below grade) for conduit and cable routing in sufficient detail for construction.
• Produce drawings, markups, back checks for electrical equipment and conduit arrangements, schematics, and wiring diagrams; specify conduit and cable; prepare supporting calculations.
• Perform site surveys and verification of installation.
• Perform power system studies, including arc‑flash assessments.
• Conduct engineering calculations, develop design options, and assist in preparing engineering procedures and specifications.
• Process data, conduct statistical analysis, and develop data plots and graphs.
• Establish meetings and participate in reviews with governing agencies for code compliance.
• Coordinate workload to complete documentation on schedule.
• Conduct work sessions at the project site with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
• Coordinate with affected disciplines on addenda, RFIs, CPRs, and change orders, incorporating agreed changes into project documents.
• Provide construction contract administration as needed.
• Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Electrical Engineers, Electrical Coordinators, or Technicians.
• Perform other duties as needed.

• Minimum of 5 years experience in electrical design of buildings (lighting/power/systems).
• Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
• Experience and/or interest in sustainable design/LEED (desired but not required).

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an Electrical emphasis.
• Previous experience in electrical design of buildings (lighting/power/systems).
• Professional Engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location (PE or P.Eng).
• Strong computer skills with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Revit, SKM, AGI, and Easy Power.
