RoleSummary:
The Financial Planning Associate is an entry‑level, CFP‑track role for someone who wants to build a career in financial planning and wealth management from the ground up. This role works directly alongside the Associate Advisor and Managing Principal, getting hands‑on exposure to the technical and analytical work behind every client's financial plan — from building cash flow projections and retirement scenarios to preparing the analysis that shapes client recommendations.
The Financial Planning Associate receives close, structured mentorship from day one, with direct client interaction growing over time as skills develop. This role has no business development responsibilities and will not develop their own client base. It is designed as a deliberate first step toward the Associate Advisor role, with growth into that position expected as competency and CFP progress build.
- Builds and maintains client financial plans in Money Guide Pro, including cash flow projections, retirement scenarios, and stress testing, under the direct mentorship of the Associate Advisor
- Performs the underlying analysis that supports client recommendations — running scenarios, modeling outcomes, and summarizing findings for Associate Advisor and Managing Principal review
- Assists in preparing client meeting materials, including agendas, reports, and deliverables
- Attends client meetings to take notes and observe, with increasing participation in discussion and follow‑up as readiness develops
- Maintains accuracy of client files, wealth management notebooks, and CRM records
- Processes routine money movement requests and tracks client account activity
- Assists with gathering account data and documentation from the broker‑dealer or custodian
- Runs and retrieves standard reports from financial management software systems
- Stays current on financial planning concepts, strategies, and relevant changes in tax or regulatory guidance, sharing relevant findings with the team
- Supports the team with general administrative tasks tied to client service delivery
- Receives ongoing, structured mentorship from the Associate Advisor and Managing Principal, with regular feedback on technical and professional development
Competencies:
- High attention to detail and strong organizational habits
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Genuine interest in financial planning analysis and a desire to learn the technical side of the work
- Ability to follow established processes and procedures accurately
- Ability to work well in a team‑based environment and take direction
- Basic understanding of investment and financial planning concepts (coursework or coursework in progress toward this a plus)
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Exposure to financial planning software is a plus (Money Guide Pro, Redtail, Schwab, Orion) but not required
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to interpret financial data and identify planning considerations
- Bachelor's Degree (preferably in Financial Planning, Finance, Economics, or related field)
- 0-2 years of financial services experience; internship experience considered favorably
- Enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, a CFP Board‑registered education program
- No licensing required at hire; willingness to obtain SIE and/or Series 7/65 within a defined timeframe as a condition of advancement toward the Associate Advisor role
- Direct mentorship from experienced advisors
- Meaningful exposure to real client financial planning from day one
- Small‑team environment with significant learning opportunities
- Clear path for professional growth and CFP development
- Collaborative culture focused on client relationships
