Department Description

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) positions form part of a collaborative team consisting of Attending Physicians, Fellows, and advanced practice providers (NPs and PAs). The APP team is highly respected and serves as the go‑to resource for attendings. We actively participate in the education of fellows and visiting residents.

Responsibilities
  • Receive sign‑out from the overnight team.
  • Pre‑round on assigned patients, develop a plan of care for the day.
  • Present patients on rounds.
  • Write daily notes.
  • Implement the plan agreed upon during rounds and respond to issues raised by nurses.
  • Credentialed to perform procedures such as intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, chest tube insertion/removal, PD drain placement, and pacing wire removal.
Hospital Responsibilities
  • Daily rounds on admitted patients in the PICU, NICU, and Pediatric units.
  • Respond and complete patient consultations with on‑call attending physicians in pediatric units and the emergency department.
  • Co‑ordinate discharge needs with the inpatient team.
  • First‑assist on surgical cases at John Muir Hospital, primarily with General Surgery, Orthopedics, and Urology, on an as‑needed and scheduled basis.
Outpatient Responsibilities
  • Conduct circumcision consultations and procedures at the Walnut Creek Clinic.
  • Provide independent General Surgery APP clinic services.

This position offers the opportunity to be involved in the whole spectrum of surgical patient care from outpatient clinical evaluation to OR first assist and inpatient rounding and management of pre‑ and postoperative patients.

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner functions under the general Nurse Practitioner Standardized Process Protocol approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC). The Physician Assistant functions under the general Physician Assistant Role Description approved by the IDPC. Both roles provide routine care and management of patients with acute and chronic complaints, collaborating with supervising physicians and following standardized procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Provide only those medical services to which the practitioner is competent and that are consistent with their education, training, and experience.
  • Consult a physician on tasks, procedures, or diagnostic problems that exceed the practitioner’s competence.
  • Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic complaints and health‑maintenance concerns according to written standardized procedures.
  • Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical examinations.
  • Perform or request diagnostic studies as indicated.
  • Administer, order, furnish, and prescribe medications.
  • Order and collect specimens for laboratory tests, screening, and therapeutic procedures.
  • Order therapy, radiology, and nursing services as needed.
  • Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency.
  • Obtain informed consent when indicated.
  • Initiate hospital admissions and discharges and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Enrol patients in investigational studies approved by the IRB and order required tests and medications.
  • Assist the supervising physician in the operating room; the RN First Assistant directly assists the surgeon under supervision.
  • Recognize age‑specific needs of patients.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Identify situations requiring immediate physician attention and initiate life‑saving procedures when necessary.
