Overview

ANNUAL SALARY: $

Position Summary: The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) provides comprehensive women's healthcare across the lifespan, including prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and gynecologic care. This role includes both outpatient clinic responsibilities and inpatient hospital-based labor and delivery services. The CNM will provide inpatient care to patients at John Muir Medical Center with a varied number of days per week as needed, nights, weekends and some holiday shifts included.

The CNM may also perform 1-4 clinical sessions in the outpatient setting at Ob-Gyn Specialist's per week as needed. The CNM works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team consisting of OB-GYN physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and support staff to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.

Responsibilities
  • Outpatient Clinic Care
    • Provide routine and comprehensive gynecologic care, including annual exams, family planning, contraceptive management, and menopause care
    • Manage prenatal patients, including initial OB visits, routine prenatal care, and patient education
    • Perform postpartum evaluations and follow-up visits
    • Perform limited sonography; first trimester dating and viability assessment
    • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests and screenings (e.g., labs, ultrasounds, Pap smears)
    • Provide patient education on pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and overall women's health
    • Collaborate with supervising physicians for consultation and referral of high-risk patients
  • Inpatient Labor & Delivery Care (Hospital-Based)
    • Manage prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care in the hospital setting in accordance with standardized procedures and protocols and in consultation with a physician
    • Perform vaginal deliveries independently for appropriate low-risk patients
    • Assist physicians with operative deliveries as required. C-section surgical assist certification must be successfully completed as per hospital requirements
    • Conduct labor assessments and monitor maternal and fetal well-being
    • Provide triage evaluation and management of obstetric patients
    • Perform procedures within scope, including:
      • Amniotomy
      • Episiotomy and repair
      • Perineal laceration repair
    • Collaborate closely with OB-GYN physicians for escalations and surgical interventions (e.g., C-section needs)
    • Provide immediate postpartum care for birthing patients
    • Perform hospital rounds, admissions, discharges, and inpatient documentation
  • Group Care & Patient Education (Centering Program)
    • Actively participate in the development, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of Centering Pregnancy (or group prenatal/postpartum care) classes.
    • Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and clinical leadership to design evidence-based group care curriculum, workflows, and patient education materials.
    • Serve as a facilitator for Centering classes, promoting patient engagement, peer support, and culturally competent care.
    • Integrate clinical care, assessment, and education within a group setting while maintaining high standards of safety and patient-centered care.
    • Assist with scheduling, coordination, and logistics of group sessions, ensuring efficient workflow and optimal patient participation.
    • Support outreach and patient recruitment efforts to grow and sustain the Centering program.
  • Collaboration & Care Coordination
    • Consult and co-manage patients with physicians as appropriate
    • Communicate effectively with nursing staff, hospital teams, and support staff
    • Ensure smooth transitions of care between clinic and hospital settings

    • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical records in the EMR
    • Comply with all regulatory, credentialing, and hospital privilege requirements including hospital medical staff bylaws and clinic policies.
    • Adhere to evidence-based clinical guidelines and organizational protocols
    • Participate in quality improvement, peer review, and maternal safety initiatives
  • On-Call & Scheduling Expectations
    • Participate in a call rotation for labor and delivery coverage
    • Provide coverage for hospital deliveries, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required per contract agreement
    • Maintain flexibility to support clinic and hospital demands
    Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    Education & Certification

    • Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) certification through AMCB
    • Current, unrestricted California RN and CNM license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing
    • Master's or Doctorate degree in Nurse-Midwifery
    • California Nurse-Midwife Furnishing Number
    • Active DEA license (or eligibility to obtain)
    • Eligibility for hospital credentialing and admitting / delivery privileges (if applicable)

    Licensure & Requirements

    • Furnishing license (if applicable in CA)
    • DEA registration
    • Credentialing and hospital privileges at affiliated hospital(s) (e.g., John Muir)

    Preferred

    • Prior clinical experience in women's health, obstetrics, or labor & delivery preferred
    • Experience managing low-risk pregnancies and deliveries strongly preferred
