Are you ready to make a splash this season? The City of Walnut is looking for enthusiastic Lifeguards to help ensure the safety of swimmers and deliver a positive aquatic experience for our community.
Responsibilities- Maintain constant visual surveillance of pool users and surrounding areas.
- Prevent accidents by recognizing hazardous conditions and enforcing rules.
- Perform water rescues, CPR, AED, and First Aid as needed.
- Warn swimmers of unsafe practices and enforce facility regulations.
- Complete incident and accident reports accurately and promptly.
- Monitor the pool deck, locker rooms, and surrounding facilities for safety.
- Assist with daily pool operations, including setup, cleaning, and equipment management.
- Maintain professional communication with participants, parents, and staff.
- Participate in in-service trainings, safety drills, and skills evaluations.
- Assist with special aquatic programs and events as assigned.
- Provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively to participants, parents, and the public.
- Perform other job‑related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Lifesaving, First Aid, CPR, and AED procedures.
- American Red Cross lifeguarding standards.
- Water Safety and hazard recognition.
- Basic Public relations and customer service practices.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Perform effective rescues under emergency conditions.
- Remain alert, attentive, and maintain vigilance for extended periods.
- Enforce regulations firmly, courteously, and consistently.
- Analyze situations quickly and adopt an effective course of action.
- Adhere to City safety standards.
- Communicate clearly and professionally.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and the public.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Experience: Prior aquatic or recreation experience is desirable; participation in a swim team or water polo team is highly desirable.
- Education: Must be at least 16 years of age with completion of the 10th grade or currently enrolled in high school.
- License or Certificates: All certifications must be valid at time of employment.
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR certificate possession required.
- Work permit – If under 18, possession of a valid work permit.
The City of Walnut may provide required certifications at no cost by enrolling successful candidates in City-sponsored training classes. Applicants who already hold the required certifications may be reimbursed for their out-of-pocket costs upon completion of the summer season.
Working ConditionsWork in an outdoor environment with prolonged exposure to the sun, elements, water, and pool chemicals; frequent standing, swimming, walking, bending, stooping, and climbing; may lift and carry up to 25 lbs., and up to 100+ lbs. during rescues; work on slippery and uneven surfaces; part‑time, have mobility, acute vision, acute hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties performed; seasonal, at‑will work that may include weekends, evenings, and holidays as required.
