Job Description

The TEC Special Education Classroom Aide/Paraprofessional/CNA supports the special education teacher in meeting the diverse needs of students with a range of disabilities. The role requires assistance with classroom modifications, personal care of students, and communication with regular and special education staff, providing structure, feedback, and additional duties as assigned.

The Education Cooperative (TEC) is a 501(c)(3) non‑profit organization located in

E. Walpole, MA, that develops and coordinates educational programs for 19 member communities. TEC operates three DESE‑approved public special education day schools, including the TEC Campus School, which offers a small, caring environment for students aged 3–21. The team includes teachers, nurses, therapists, and paraprofessionals who provide personalized multisensory instruction to meet various learning, communication, social, emotional, motor, behavior, daily living, and transition goals.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Interact and work with students ages 3 to 22 individually and in small groups under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Work in special education or general education settings, including inclusion, reviewing and reinforcing previously introduced lessons and implementing individualized programs (IEP).
  • Understand basic instructional needs and techniques for students with disabilities and assist in modifying instruction.
  • Escort and assist students as necessary, including lifting, toileting/diapering, feeding via a G‑tube, activities of daily living (ADL), and behavior management (non‑violent crisis intervention after completing Safety Care training).
  • Assist in the administration of tests and evaluation of student progress.
  • Correct students’ day‑to‑day class work, but not responsible for grading.
  • Carry out teacher‑planned learning exercises, including core curriculum instruction, academic support, and support for related therapies such as speech and language, occupational, physical, music, and adaptive physical education.
  • Fulfill students’ transition and job‑coaching needs when applicable.
  • Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information as expected of fully certified teachers.
  • Participate in staff development curriculum, including restraint training, ABA training, and additional in‑service programs.
  • Establish effective relationships with classroom teachers, specialists, administration, and parents.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Program Director or supervising teacher.
  • Exhibit promptness and dependability in completing all assigned duties in accordance with TEC Personnel Policies.
  • Maintain consistent attendance from the start to the end of the day.
  • Travel between program classrooms when necessary.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • CNA license (if applicable).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
Knowledge, Ability, & Skills
  • Interest and/or experience working with students with a variety of special education needs.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, school staff, and administration.
  • Ability to cooperate with colleagues.
  • Effective oral and communication skills.
  • Calm and professional handling of stressful situations.
Job Environment
  • Work takes place in classrooms and other school rooms/areas, including offices, within a school building setting and sometimes in community settings. Work is primarily indoors.
Physical Requirements
  • Speak with an understandable voice and sufficient volume.
  • Vision sufficient to read printed documents and view detail on a computer screen for extended periods.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching, and carrying/lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Can hear sounds clearly up to 20 feet.
Compensation and Position Type
  • Part‑time position.
  • Salary: $137 per day.
