Job Description
Milestones Day School is a year‑round private special education school located in Waltham, MA serving students with autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, and other challenges from elementary to post‑high school. The Assistant Principal & Curriculum Director will lead academic programming, curriculum development, and staff support to deliver exceptional educational experiences in a therapeutic environment aligned with Common Core and Massachusetts frameworks.
Position OverviewReporting to the Principal, this role oversees academic instruction, staff development, and school‑wide systems. As a leadership team member, the candidate will supervise curricular design, guide instructional practices, and foster an inclusive culture engaging staff, families, and students.
Key Responsibilities- Coach academic staff on curriculum, classroom management, and instruction.
- Support new teacher onboarding, provide in‑service training, and conduct observations and evaluations.
- Maintain compliance with teaching licensure requirements.
- Model organizational practices and keep up to date with innovative instructional strategies.
- Lead data‑based inquiry and promote technology integration.
- Align curriculum with Common Core and state standards.
- Plan curriculum, review course offerings, and develop cohort groupings.
- Collaborate on student schedules and ensure high‑school students meet graduation requirements.
- Partner with the School‑Based Leadership Team and lead daily operations.
- Serve as interim Principal when needed.
- Support MCAS testing logistics, scheduling, and proctor training.
- Contribute to school‑wide planning, professional development, scheduling, and event coordination.
- Participate in admissions, provide academic recommendations, and facilitate placement decisions.
- Collaborate with therapeutic staff to integrate universal practices and PBIS.
- Foster a positive, collaborative environment and build relationships across staff.
- Support DEI initiatives with the DEI Committee and HR.
- Ensure cultural sensitivity in curriculum and instructional materials.
- Identify strengths and improvement areas; propose and implement solutions.
- Assist in school decision‑making and perform additional duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Special Education or Education.
- 5–7 years of teaching experience, including special education.
- 2+ years of related leadership and supervision experience (5–7+ preferred).
- In‑state licensure:
Moderate Disabilities (PreK–8) and/or (5–12); professional or principal licensure preferred.
