Job Description

Job Summary: The Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning provides instructional leadership to improve student achievement and teacher effectiveness. This role supports the building principal with teaching and learning, analyzes assessment data, conducts staff evaluations, and leads professional learning communities. The Assistant Principal ensures high-quality instruction, fosters pedagogical growth, and drives academic success across the school.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership:
Strong knowledge of MA State Frameworks. Lead the development, implementation, and refinement of instruction, curriculum and assessment practices. Ensure alignment of curriculum with state standards and district priorities. Promote high-quality, culturally responsive, and standards-based instruction across all content areas. Support the implementation of effective instructional strategies and best practices. Provide professional development. Knowledge of DESE Accountability system. Teacher Evaluation & Support:
Knowledge of DESE evaluation rubrics. Participate in informal observations, conduct observations and evaluations of educators in alignment with the educator evaluation system. Provide timely, actionable feedback to improve instructional practice. Support teacher goal-setting and professional growth plans. Develop coaching plans for teachers, including new, developing and veteran educators. Data Analysis & Achievement Monitoring:
Analyze student performance data (formative, interim, and summative assessments). Lead data team meetings to identify trends, gaps, and targeted instructional responses. Monitor progress toward school and district academic goals. Support development and implementation of intervention and enrichment strategies. Oversight of student assessments. Monitor student data and tasks specific to local and state graduation requirements. Collaborate with the graduation improvement team to ensure students are meeting graduation requirements.

Professional Learning & Development:
Design, coordinate, and facilitate high-quality professional development aligned to school goals. Build staff capacity in instructional practices, assessment literacy, and differentiation. Support collaborative structures such as PLCs and CPT. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and reflective practice. Collaboration & School Leadership:
Work closely with the principal and leadership team to advance school improvement efforts. Collaborate with counselors, department directors, instructional coaches and support staff to ensure cohesive student support systems. Support school-wide initiatives related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Assist in the development and monitoring of the School Improvement Plan. Support the work of the school as part of DESE’s Accelerated Achievement Network.

Student-Centered Practices:
Promote equitable access to rigorous coursework and high-quality instruction. Support systems that address diverse learning needs, including special education and multilingual learners. Foster a positive, inclusive, and academically focused school culture.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Education or related field required. Minimum five years of teaching and/or administrative experience. Valid DESE Massachusetts administrative license. Experience in teaching and instructional leadership at the secondary level preferred. Strong knowledge of curriculum design, assessment practices, and data analysis. Experience with educator evaluation systems. Demonstrated commitment to equity and excellence in education.
