Mechanical Engineer
Atlas is our next‑generation humanoid robot, built to perform useful work in dynamic, real‑world environments. Achieving that goal requires carefully engineered, heavily integrated, electro‑mechanical actuators that are compact, efficient, and reliable under demanding conditions. We’re looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design and development of our tightly integrated actuator hardware, from electromechanical subsystems to complex assemblies with precision and load‑bearing requirements.
You will be responsible for delivering well‑designed and tested components and subsystems that directly impact the robot’s motion, manipulation, and overall performance. You will integrate with the team by working closely with prot‑ops working on production and design fixes, learning key sub‑systems, and building up to a holistic system understanding and white sheet design concepts.
- Lead mechanical design efforts for key subsystems, from early concept through production.
- Support prototyping, bring‑up, and issue resolution throughout the product lifecycle.
- Interface directly with the Proto‑Ops and repair team to diagnose and resolve mechanical bugs found on the production line and on fielded robots.
- Test and implement mechanical fixes and improvements, owning the process from concept development through validation and formal implementation via Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
- Apply your knowledge to balance performance, manufacturability, and reliability across a range of mechanical requirements—torque, stiffness, mass, thermal behavior, and tolerance stack‑ups.
- Use simulation and analysis tools to guide decisions and validate your designs.
- Collaborate closely with electrical and controls engineers to ensure clean integration and testability.
- Have strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including statics, dynamics, materials, and heat transfer.
- Are fluent in CAD (we use 3
DEXPERIENCE) and are confident in managing complex mechanical assemblies. - Have experience in failure analysis, root cause investigation, and implementing design changes in a production environment.
- Have a proven ability to manage technical trade‑offs and drive timely resolution of high‑stakes, real‑world problems.
- Are comfortable working hands‑on during development, test, and debug.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- A minimum of 4–6 years of related experience or an advanced degree with 2+ years of experience.
- Proven ability to lead designs through the full development cycle from blank sheet or design improvements through validation and implementation.
- Experience with Jira, JAMA, and Smartsheets.
- Experience using CATIA 3DX CAD system.
- Experience using Arena and/or ENOVIA PLM systems.
