Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, maintain, and enforce EHS programs, policies and procedures and work instructions in accordance with OSHA, EPA, Massachusetts DEP, and local Waltham regulations.
- Manage hazardous materials, chemical storage, and waste disposal programs in compliance with the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard.
- Oversee chemical hygiene plans and laboratory safety programs, ensuring compliance with OSHA Lab Standard (29 CFR ).
- Develop and maintain safety procedures for battery fabrication, testing, storage, and transportation.
- Provide guidance on safe handling, storage, and disposal of lithium‑ion batteries and other energy storage materials.
- Conduct hazard assessments, risk analysis, and recommend corrective actions for process safety and environmental compliance.
- Maintain records for regulatory inspections, safety audits, and training activities.
- Conduct EHS training for staff on chemical safety, battery hazards, personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency response procedures.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and reporting.
- Lead in preparing for regulatory inspections and audits (EPA, OSHA, MA DEP, local authorities).
- Develop emergency response plans and conduct drills for fire, chemical spill, gas release, and battery thermal runaway events.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and stock levels
- Coordinate domestic and international shipments with carriers.
- Minimum 3–5 years of EHS experience in a laboratory or battery R&D environment.
- HAZWOPER certification (24‑hour preferred; 40‑hour acceptable).
- Knowledge of chemical hygiene requirements, laboratory safety standards, and MSDS/SDS management.
- Experience with lithium‑ion battery handling and energy storage safety protocols.
- Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, and Massachusetts‑specific EHS regulations.
- Strong understanding of environmental permitting, hazardous waste management, and emergency response planning.
- Ability to perform risk assessments, inspections, and compliance audits.
- Strong communication and training skills.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
- Experience in R&D battery facilities or advanced energy storage labs.
- Knowledge of fire protection and chemical reaction hazard mitigation specific to lithium‑ion technology.
- Ability to work in laboratory and production environments with chemicals, battery materials, and associated PPE.
- May require lifting up to 25 lbs, working with respirators, and performing duties in confined spaces under controlled conditions.
- Flexible to respond to emergencies and off‑hours safety incidents as required.
- 6–12 months with potential extension based on project needs.
