Brandeis University is delighted to announce a new opportunity as the Temporary Equipment Mechanic I, Lead in the Facilities Department.
Under the direction of the Manager, Grounds & Fleet, the Equipment Mechanic I, Lead, maintains, troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs all types of vehicles and equipment owned and leased by Brandeis University. Manages the Facilities Services Fleet inspection program.
Must have an extensive knowledge of diagnosing, repairing and maintaining all small engines as well as gas and diesel vehicles and equipment.
This position is a Local 615, 32BJ Service Employees International Union (SEIU) position.
The hourly rate for this position is $43.47, 40 hours per week.
This position is estimated to be 3 months in duration.
Job Functions:
Lead Equipment Mechanic Functions:
* Must have sufficient knowledge of small engines, gas and diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical systems.
* Relay information and assignments to others as directed by manager.
* Instruct and direct fellow employees assigned to assist Lead equipment mechanic
* Schedule routine and unexpected maintenance on all Brandeis owned/leased vehicles and equipment
* Schedules and ensures required Brandeis and State inspections are up to date
* Maintain parts and supply inventory for maintenance of Brandeis owned and leased vehicles and equipment.
* Assess and update all work order assignments using the department's computerized work order management system. This includes keeping records, writing reports, and identifying/requesting materials, and recording time in a timely manner.
* Make recommendations pertaining to the condition and longevity of all University owned/leased vehicles and equipment
Main Functions:
* Diagnose nature and extent of equipment and vehicle malfunction.
* Raise vehicles and equipment utilizing hydraulic and floor jacks to gain access
* Replace, adjust, install and repair accessories (radios, heaters, mirrors, windshield wipers, headlights etc.)
* Utilize Equipment requiring a MA hoisting license
* Lubricate equipment and change engine and hydraulic oil and transmission fluids.
* Repair and install tires using a tire changing machine
* Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, and hydraulics
* Utilize trucks and utility vehicles with plows and sanders, as well as front end loaders to remove and treat snow and ice from all areas on campus.
* Maintains and repairs small engine equipment including blowers, string trimmers and lawn mowers including blade sharpening
* Assist the Groundspersons team as directed by the manager.
General Functions:
* Follow proper safety procedures and observe all safety rules and regulations including OSHA
* Respond to emergency call-ins as needed
* Read, write, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions in English.
* Participates in training to keep and acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities in order to remain current with standard operational practices and revised standards
* Establish and maintain a positive cooperative working relationship with supervisors, fellow workers, department heads, and other members of the campus community.
* Work in an environment subject to frequent changing climate conditions, priorities and deadlines.
* Drive a University Vehicle requiring Class B Commercial Driver's License

Education, Licenses and
Work Experience:
* Education:
High School Diploma or GED required, Mechanic training required.
* Valid and current United States Driver's License required.
* Massachusetts Hoisting License 1C/2A required.
* Class B Commercial Driver's License required.
* DOT Medical Certificate.
* Work Experience:
5 years of practical experience on repairing and maintaining small engine, gas, and diesel vehicles and equipment required.
* 1 year of supervisory experience in shop/garage preferred.
Job Qualifications and Requirements:
Physical/Environmental Demands:
* Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
* Work may be performed outside during all New England seasons.
* Manually lift up to 60 pounds. Heavier material or equipment is lifted using other methods.
* Drive a University Vehicle.
Additional Requirements/
Qualifications:
* Frequent use of verbal and written skills through the work order system.
* May explain and offer guidance on routine procedures.
* Must have an extensive understanding of gas and diesel engines.
* Must be able to use OBD II diagnostic computer
* Must be able to use hand, power and pneumatic tools and lifts
