Job Summary
The Equipment Mechanic I, Lead in the Facilities Department will maintain, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair all types of vehicles and equipment owned or leased by Brandeis University. The role includes managing the Facilities Services Fleet inspection program and leading a team of employees.
Responsibilities- Schedule routine and unexpected maintenance on all Brandeis owned/leased vehicles and equipment.
- Schedule, ensure, and maintain required Brandeis and State inspections up to date.
- Maintain parts and supply inventory for maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Assess and update all work order assignments using the department’s computerized work order management system.
- Relay information and assignments to others as directed by the manager; instruct and direct fellow employees.
- Diagnose the nature and extent of equipment and vehicle malfunctions.
- Utilize hydraulic and floor jacks, MA hoisting license, and other equipment to raise, adjust, install, and repair accessories and major assemblies.
- Lubricate equipment and change engine, hydraulic, and transmission fluids.
- Repair and install tires using a tire changing machine; correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems.
- Operate trucks, utility vehicles with plows and sanders, and front‑end loaders to remove and treat snow and ice from campus areas.
- Maintain and repair small‑engine equipment such as blowers, string trimmers, and lawn mowers, including blade sharpening.
- Assist the Groundspersons team as directed by the manager.
- Follow proper safety procedures and observe all safety rules and regulations, including OSHA.
- Respond to emergency call‑ins as needed.
- Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English.
- Participate in training to acquire and maintain knowledge and skills necessary to remain current with standard operational practices.
- Establish and maintain a positive cooperative working relationship with supervisors, fellow workers, department heads, and other members of the campus community.
- Work in an environment subject to frequent changing climate conditions, priorities, and deadlines.
- Drive a University Vehicle requiring a ClassB Commercial Driver’s License.
- High School Diploma or GED required; mechanic training required.
- Valid and current United States Driver’s License required.
- Massachusetts Hoisting License 1C/2A required.
- ClassB Commercial Driver’s License required.
- DOT Medical Certificate.
- 5 years of practical experience repairing and maintaining small engine, gas, and diesel vehicles and equipment required.
- 1 year of supervisory experience in a shop/garage preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining small engines, gas, and diesel vehicles and equipment, hydraulics as well as electrical systems.
- Ability to use OBDII diagnostic computer and hand, power, pneumatic tools, and lifts.
- Ability to use MA hoisting license and other equipment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain routine procedures.
- Capacity to follow instructions from supervisors or senior managers.
- Ability to direct and work with other staff members; ability to work within Facilities Services budget.
- Prolonged periods of standing or walking, and ability to manually lift up to 60pounds with assistance for heavier items.
- Ability to work outdoors across all New England seasons.
Hourly rate of $43.47 for a 40‑hour week, with a competitive benefits and compensation package that includes medical, dental, life insurances, tuition assistance for employees, dependents and spouses, a 403b retirement savings plan with generous match.
