Job SummaryReporting to the Health and Wellness Director and working with other Wellness staff, the Group Exercise Instructor instructs group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. The instructor effectively builds community within the class, modifies sessions to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs, and serves as a leader in cultivating healthy habits among members.
The YMCA invites applications for all varieties of group exercise offerings as it expands its program portfolio.
- Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes as directed by the supervisor to provide high‑quality experiences for members and guests.
- Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving health and well‑being goals.
- Maintains a working knowledge of wellness trends through YUSA courses and external training to provide effective information and support to members.
- Builds authentic relationships with members, helping them connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Observes and adapts the approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
- Celebrates program participants’ achievements related to personal or program goals and overall well‑being.
- Keeps accurate class attendance records using Motion Vibe’s Group Exercise Management software.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures and responds to emergency situations.
- Resolves member issues professionally in alignment with YMCA values.
- At least one year of experience in a group exercise setting.
- Current certification in Group Exercise from a nationally certifying body (NCCA accredited certifications preferred, e.g., ACE, AFFA, NASM, NSCA, ISSA).
- If teaching a specific format (Yoga, Spin, Les Mills Body Pump, Body Combat), current certification required.
- Experience in health and wellness programming and group instruction.
- Understanding of internal and external marketing and special events.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
- Understanding the relationship between the public and the organization, and enhancing those relationships.
- Ability to interpret and implement the YMCA’s mission and goals into classes and programs.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive environment for participants of all backgrounds, abilities, and experience levels.
- Teamwork skills as an integral staff member.
- Effective communication with adults, youth, teens, seniors, and special populations.
- Degree in Exercise Science or Physical Education preferred but not required.
- Develop leadership skills in a caring, challenging, and diverse working environment.
