Job Summary
The Business Development Manager is responsible for promoting and expanding the global application of Smithers’ ecotoxicology, environmental fate & metabolism, chemistry, and residue testing services, with a primary focus on the North American market. This role is accountable for achieving sales targets and driving revenue growth through strategic customer engagement, relationship development, and technical solution-based selling.
The incumbent must possess a strong understanding of product registration and maintenance requirements for plant protection products, biocides, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, as well as the regulatory and scientific challenges faced by Smithers’ clients. This position requires the ability to translate complex scientific and regulatory needs into tailored service offerings and technical proposals in collaboration with internal scientific and operational teams.
This role manages the full sales lifecycle, including lead generation, pipeline management, proposal development and delivery, contract negotiation, and post-sale follow-up. The Business Development Manager also supports cross-divisional lead identification within Smithers and represents the organization at industry conferences, seminars, and exhibitions as needed.
Key Responsibilities Business Development & Sales Execution- Meet or exceed assigned sales objectives and revenue targets for Smithers laboratory services
- Identify, target, and develop new business opportunities within strategic and existing accounts
- Develop and execute account plans, call strategies, and opportunity assessments to grow the sales pipeline
- Conduct outreach through email, phone, virtual meetings, and in-person client visits
- Personally manage and close key sales opportunities across assigned territories or market segments
- Understand and communicate regulatory requirements for plant protection products, biocides, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals
- Translate client scientific and regulatory needs into appropriate Smithers service solutions
- Collaborate with scientific and operational teams to develop accurate, competitive, and technically sound proposals
- Present proposals to clients, address questions, and manage follow-up communications in a timely manner
- Build and maintain strong relationships with strategic and target accounts to support long-term partnerships
- Manage and maintain an accurate sales pipeline and client relationship database (CRM)
- Track opportunities, leads, proposals, and client interactions in accordance with internal sales processes
- Prepare and deliver regular sales reports, forecasts, and pipeline updates to leadership
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of all client activity and opportunity progression
- Research and monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and competitor activity within relevant markets
- Identify new market opportunities and provide insights to support strategic business growth
- Maintain updated client lists and segmentation of target markets and accounts
- Represent Smithers at conferences, trade shows, seminars, and industry events as required
- Promote Smithers’ capabilities and technical expertise to external stakeholders
- Strengthen brand awareness and market presence through professional engagement
- Strong understanding of ecotoxicology, environmental fate & metabolism, chemistry, and/or regulatory testing services
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks for plant protection products, biocides, chemicals, or pharmaceuticals
- Proven experience in solution-based technical sales or business development in a scientific or laboratory services environment
- Strong ability to interpret technical and regulatory requirements and translate them into service offerings
- Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple accounts and priorities simultaneously
- Experience with CRM systems and pipeline management tools
- Ability to collaborate effectively with scientific, operational, and commercial teams
- Strong analytical skills with ability to assess market trends and business opportunities
- Willingness to travel domestically and occasionally internationally for client meetings and industry events
The salary range for this role is $115,000 - $125,000 gross pay per year, based on relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
