JOB DESCRIPTION

Provide leadership to effectively plan, coordinate, and implement programs of instruction that ensure students opportunities to reach their highest social, emotional, and academic potential. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the location and at the time designated. Select and present materials required in the teaching assignment within the framework of the content limitations of state and system curriculum guides. Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

Develop and implement classroom technology that may relate to the use of audio, video, graphics, research technologies, and other tools to facilitate learning. Prepare for classes assigned and show evidence of preparation upon request of the principal or designee. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Provide adequate background information and materials when a substitute teacher is to assume responsibilities.

Maintain satisfactory attendance defined by the system or local school handbook. Comply with the conditions stated in the contract of employment. Comply with the federal, state, and local board of education requirements for the development of educationally appropriate instruction. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and work cooperatively with all staff members in attaining school goals and objectives.

Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Attend staff, department, team, or grade level meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Participate as required in the appropriate state annual evaluation process. Perform such additional responsibilities as may be assigned by the building administrators.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES ARE AS FOLLOWS

Abides by the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Evaluates students with disabilities and implements appropriate programming for students with cognitive and developmental disabilities. Develops (in GOIEP) and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEP) in accordance with state and federal requirements. Monitors and reports progress on IEP goals and objectives through data collection and makes appropriate adjustments to the student's education program as needed.

Participates in training and administers the Georgia Alternate Assessment (GAA) to eligible students in appropriate grade levels as specified by the Georgia Department of Education. Collaborates with district Special Education personnel to implement appropriate programming, classroom structure, behavior management routines, and various communication modalities utilized by individual students. Works collaboratively with and guides/supports paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom. Provides consultation to other staff members concerning the unique needs of the students and appropriate interventions and accommodations.

Participates in district Mindset Safety Management - De-escalation training and utilization of techniques according to individual student needs. Collaborates with other staff members and parents regarding the academic achievement and functional performance of students. Maintains strict confidentiality of all student information. Follows all procedural safeguards and documents adherence in an appropriate manner.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, OR TRAINING

Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and state-required certification for Special Education Adapted Curriculum.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Ability to organize, coordinate, plan, and direct the implementation of a comprehensive classroom instructional program for students with cognitive and developmental disabilities. Proficiency required in oral and written communication, interpersonal relations, and competency in counseling and evaluating students with disabilities.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Successful teacher training and teaching experiences at the level to which assigned. Experience working with students with cognitive and developmental disabilities and the administration of the Georgia Alternate Assessment (GAA) is preferred. Experience with the Infinite Campus student information system and online GOIEP platform is preferred.
