Special Education Teacher – Autism (Adapted Curriculum)
Position:
Full time, reports to the Principal.
Instructs elementary, middle, and high school students with Autism in basic academic and living skills in subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, etc. May be designated by subject matter/content specialty. Utilizes current strategies and theories to plan and implement lessons and instruction in the general curriculum using grade level standards.
Key Responsibilities- Teach students with Autism academic content and living skills.
- Prepare lessons and instructional materials according to each student’s achievement level as specified in Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
- Prepare course outlines and objectives according to curriculum guidelines or state/local requirements.
- Observe, evaluate, and prepare progress reports on students, including reevaluation referrals and development of IEPs.
- Coordinate instructional activities with other professionals (teachers, speech therapist, occupational therapists, physical therapist, mobility specialist, etc.).
- Assist students with special assistive devices and with boarding and de‑boarding from the school bus.
- Conduct parent/teacher conferences to review student progress, performance, and behavior problems; work with parents/guardians to develop an appropriate special education program.
- Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
- Perform all other duties assigned and required in order to perform the above services.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate education field (preferably Special Education or General Education with a teaching certificate in Special Education).
- Minimum of one year teaching experience preferred.
- Certification:
Low Function Autism – Special Education Adaptive Curriculum & all five content areas (currently GACE Tests 083/084 + 087/088). - Excellent classroom management skills.
- Ability to apply technology to improve effectiveness of school operations.
- Working in a normal classroom/school setting.
- Physical ability to stand and walk approximately 7 to 7½ hours per day; occasional travel to other school locations possible.
- Moderate duty: majority sitting at a desk or table, intermittent standing or stooping.
- Lifting or carrying up to 35 lbs unassisted; assist with heavy lifting up to 100 lbs.
