Summary / Objectives
The Universal Banker serves as a full service, single point of contact in the branch for South State customers’ financial needs. The position operates in the dual capacity of a Teller and FSR providing exceptional customer service in both transactional and account management. The Universal Banker seeks to attract, expand, and retain customer relationships and is responsible for contributing to the financial growth of the bank.
EssentialFunctions
- Serves customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to the South State Bank Service Standards.
- Knows and understands the products and services offered by the Bank, including facts, features, benefits, rules, regulations, and price structure.
- Identifies customer needs and expectations by listening for clues.
- Opens customer relationship opportunities by making referrals as outlined in the goals for this position.
- Maintains a neat and professional personal appearance in accordance with bank policy.
- Ensures compliance with all banking regulations, including Regulation CC and the Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develops a strong understanding of customer‑facing technology and enrolls customers in self‑service options.
- Has a strong understanding of safety, security, audit procedures, and the operation of security devices.
- Processes transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts.
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
- May assist in guiding and training new tellers.
- May allow customers access to safe deposit boxes, cash checks, and process savings withdrawals within assigned limits.
- Sells certified checks, balances transactions daily, and may service/balance ATM.
- Utilizes the branch capture system as required.
- Follows policies and procedures to minimize operational errors and maintain proper workflow.
- Opens new deposit accounts and handles other services such as stop payments, wire transfers, and other maintenance functions within assigned limits.
- Explains policies and procedures as necessary to customers.
- Resolves customer problems and complaints with courtesy and discretion, and directs customers with difficult problems to other sources for assistance.
- Sees problems and complaints as opportunities to satisfy the customer and promote additional services.
- Gives business cards to customers when appropriate.
- At least 18 months of teller or cash handling experience and 6 months of customer relationship building or sales experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in the TellerII and basic FSR job functions.
- Additional responsibilities may include vault or back‑up vault duties and have increased approval limits for teller transactions and check signing.
- Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. - Experience:
Cash handling, sales, customer service; previous banking experience preferred. - Specific Knowledge:
Good interpersonal skills, computer skills, ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

- Additional training may be required depending on experience.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, stand or sit for long periods, access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, and cash denominations, and identify customers.
Work EnvironmentThis position is most likely in an open lobby area with an individual workstation inside a cooled and heated facility with access to a break room or rest room during breaks.
TravelTravel may be required to attend meetings or training as needed.
