PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
To perform protective work functions associated with protection of life and property; enforcement of federal, state, and local laws; and duties within an assigned shift or specialty such as Patrol Division, Traffic Division, Warrant Division, Courthouse Security, School Resource Officer.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Enforce all applicable codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
- Patrol designated areas via motor vehicle or on foot to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations.
- Prevent and discover commission of crime; apprehend, arrest, and process criminals, fugitives, and offenders; write citations.
- Respond to calls relayed by dispatchers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing person searches, rescue operations, public service duties, stranded motorists, etc.
- Conduct preliminary investigations, interview victims, complainants, and witnesses, take statements, gather information and evidence, and secure crime scenes.
- Enforce vehicle parking and operating laws and use radar/laser speed detection units to enforce speed laws.
- Inspect premises of residential and commercial buildings and properties to detect suspicious conditions.
- Provide traffic control and police protection for events such as parades, processions, funerals, ball games, school crossings, and provide security/escort services to individuals, businesses, or others as appropriate.
- Participate in court activities and testify in judicial proceedings.
- Serve criminal and civil warrants.
- Administer first aid and CPR as necessary.
- Inspect and maintain assigned patrol vehicle, uniform, weapons, equipment, etc.
- Transport prisoners, members of the general public, or other individuals as required.
- May participate as a member of the Sheriff's Response Team (S.R.T.) and respond to emergency calls for hostage situations, barricaded persons, high‑risk drug raids, riots, missing or escaped prisoner searches, high‑security activities, and other situations requiring special weapons and tactical team assistance; participate in regular training activities.
- Provide assistance and backup support to other deputies or departments as necessary, substitute for co‑workers in their absence, and perform flexible unit assignments as needed in emergency response on a twenty‑four‑hour basis.
- Provide assistance to other public service agencies such as fire departments, city police departments, state patrol units, and emergency medical personnel.
- Confere with supervisors, staff, deputies, and others to obtain information or resolve problems; contact command and supervisory personnel by radio, telephone, pager/beeper, voicemail, etc., for emergency response and critical‑incident communications.
- Communicate effectively and coherently over law‑enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
- Create and maintain positive public relations with the general public; educate the public on laws, law enforcement, crime prevention, drug abuse, etc.
- Respond to questions, complaints, and requests for information or assistance by telephone or in person from the general public, news media, court personnel, attorneys, inmates, employees, officials, or other persons.
- Answer telephone calls, provide information, take and relay messages, and direct calls to appropriate personnel as necessary.
- Operate a computer to research, review, enter, and/or modify information in database.
- Process documentation associated with department operations, distribute or maintain records within specified time frames.
- Prepare reports, logs, citations, forms, and other documents; maintain files and logs; perform other clerical duties.
- Receive various documentation; review, process, respond, forward, and/or take other action as appropriate.
- Maintain current manuals, policies, procedures, bulletins, map books, and other reference material.
- Maintain inventory of department supplies and initiate requests for new or replacement materials.
