At Houston Methodist, the Perioperative Nurse Coordinator position is an experienced Operating Room Nurse, serving as a clinical resource, assumes leadership responsibilities with high-level contributions in direct patient interaction, functioning at the Expert level according to Benner’s model of clinical practice. This position acts as the primary liaison between other departments, vendors, surgeons, anesthesia, and OR staff, assisting management with the coordination and facilitation of care, process improvement, quality initiatives, and the overall growth of the perioperative program.
The Perioperative Nurse Coordinator provides patient care as an operating room nurse circulator or in a scrub role, as needed, and assists with providing breaks and lunches for staff. The role promotes standardization and efficiency of care for patients in the perioperative environment, evaluates direct and indirect costs, ensures appropriate and adequate resources are allocated for scheduled surgeries, and may serve as charge nurse, lead unit, and participate in shared governance activities.

QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing
- Master’s degree preferred
- Five years registering nurse experience in an operating room setting
- Six months in a previous leadership capacity (committee chair, charge nurse or coordinator preferred)
- RN – Texas State Licensure – must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency)
- BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
- CNOR – Certified Operating Room Nurse (CCI) – Cardiovascular Credentialing International (NCCA) – Preferred
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) as defined by unit/service line
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
- Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially in activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
- Communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers in a manner consistent with a customer‑service focus and positive language principles
- Has effective community resource knowledge and the judgment to select and coordinate resources, including referrals to regulatory agencies
- Demonstrates highly developed clinical, documentation, and analytical skills
- Displays professionalism, remains composed under stress, and takes responsibility for delivering on personal and organizational commitments
- Works independently; possesses organization, time‑management, and prioritization skills
- Employs clinical problem‑solving and critical thinking regarding surgical instrumentation

- Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional teams, patients, and families
- Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
- Provides coordination and leadership to ensure overall perioperative workflow, quality, positive patient outcomes, and stakeholder satisfaction; assists with coordinating case observations, orientations, preceptorships, clinical rotations, and training
- Develops relationships with physicians, vendors, and healthcare providers to assure effective communication and efficient patient flow for perioperative patients
- Communicates clearly, positively, and constructively to all team members, fostering a climate free of fear and encouraging critical thinking
- Solicits feedback on staff competence to match skill sets to assigned surgery; collaborates with educators and vendors for timely OR staff in‑services; implements initiatives to improve department engagement scores
