Jailer

Job Description

The Jailer is responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and awaiting trial at Gwinnett County Jail, a direct supervision pretrial facility. Incumbents must obtain a state certificate from jailer's school within six months of hire.

• Learn department policies and procedures and perform general law enforcement duties, including responding to calls, conducting searches for contraband, ensuring proper handling of evidence, testifying in court, and serving court orders and special conditions.
• Assist in processing paperwork for admission or release of inmates or detainees, searching individuals, inventorying property, confiscating or distributing property, and maintaining accurate headcount.
• Ensure security and safety of inmates by preventing injury, conducting routine cell and inmate searches to remove contraband and weapons, completing applicable forms and documents, and enforcing write‑ups.
• Assist other agencies in transferring inmates to other facilities and ensuring proper documentation.
• Issue clothing, perform inmate meal and commissary distribution, oversee recreational activities, and oversee cafeteria and laundry services.
• Provide orientation information to inmates—including visitation sign‑ups, medical and mental health information, GRIP information, court dates, and bail and bond information.
• Escort inmates or detainees throughout the facility for special programs, medical appointments, mental health appointments, and court appearances.
• Maintain daily logs of shift activities and prepare various reports.

• Background check including motor vehicle histories, criminal histories, and fingerprinting.
• This position may require 24‑hour on‑call assignment, overtime or working weekends, holidays, 10‑hour, 12‑hour, and rotating shifts.

• High school diploma, or GED.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application.
• Must be a United States Citizen.
• Must be able to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
• Must obtain and maintain a Basic Jail Officer Certification within six months from date of hire.
• Must successfully complete field training through the County.

Grade: JO213. Base salary: $52,754.00.

• Possible hiring incentive up to 10% of the starting salary: $52,754.00.
• If an associate’s degree is held, salary may increase to $54,336.62 (includes 3% pay incentive).
• If a bachelor’s degree is held, salary may increase to $55,919.24 (includes 6% pay incentive).

Employees may be eligible for promotions to Jailer Senior ($53,030.00) and Jailer Master ($56,211.00) upon successful completion of job requirements.
