We are seeking an experienced Utility Locator to identify and mark gas, water, and sewer lines using utility prints and locating equipment. The role requires the ability to work in diverse terrains and weather conditions with strong time‑management and independent work skills.
Responsibilities- Work safely, follow safe work practices, and report unsafe conditions.
- Locate underground utility lines specified by the client.
- Interpret job order tickets, email requests, phone calls, blueprints, and maps to efficiently route and perform duties.
- Use utility maps, as‑built civil engineering drawings, GIS information and various pipe and electronic locating equipment.
- Utilize stakes, flags, and/or paint to mark the location of underground utilities.
- Prepare various reports, forms, and memos to document work completed and problems encountered and/or resolved.
- Verify field information and notify the designated city departments regarding updates and corrections.
- Develop a knowledge and understanding of the underground facilities infrastructure.
- Operate company vehicle in a safe manner according to vehicle policy.
- Perform work in all weather conditions, during normal hours and after hours.
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
High School Diploma or GED. 1‑year utility location experience and/or 2‑3 years water/wastewater experience preferred.
Licenses and CertificationsValid Driver’s License. C Operator Distribution/Collection System Operator license or C Operator Water/Wastewater license preferred.
Technical SkillsAdvanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and internet. Ability to work with tablet and mobile devices. Working knowledge of OSHA requirements, DOT regulations, and utility SOPs. Proficiency completing regulatory documentation, reports, and correspondence.
CommunicationCommunicates clearly and professionally with homeowners, contractors, and utility representatives. Maintains composure in challenging situations and collaborates with others. Promotes a culture of diversity, respect, and accountability.
Problem Solving and QualityPay attention to detail, identify and solve complex issues, interpret drawings, plans, and GIS information to best identify utility lines, and develop innovative solutions.
Managing for ResultsFollow company policies and SOPs, delegate, prioritize and manage work, balance competing priorities, scheduling issues, and deadlines, and deliver effective feedback.
Physical DemandsFrequent lifting of 40–50 pounds, moving equipment/tools, sitting, squatting, bending, crawling, climbing, reaching, and occasional full range motion lifting up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in all types of terrain and hazards.
Working EnvironmentWork in all types of terrain and hazards (grass, gravel, ditches, etc.) and environments (construction sites, highways, industrial, private property, etc.) with exposure to weather conditions, fumes, gases, and dust.
