Responsibilities
Plan, coordinate, and control shipment of material, equipment, and hazardous materials to domestic and international destinations.
- Prepare shipment documentation and verify accuracy.
- Provide status updates, resolve issues, prepare reports, and trace shipments upon request.
- Manage traffic by selecting, approving, procuring, and utilizing safe and cost‑effective carriers.
- Determine efficient rates and routes for inbound, export, domestic, and overseas shipments.
- Classify, rate, route, and move a wide range of commodities, including hazardous materials.
- Schedule shipping dates, pickup, loading, and transportation from DLA Distribution Depot to government activities.
- Verify and process invoices using automated systems.
- Communicate with carriers for rates and routing as needed.
- Correct documentation errors and address invalid, void, or missing information.
- U.S. citizen.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
- Must obtain and maintain hazardous materials handling certifications.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain other required licenses and certifications.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and the ability to work in hazardous, refrigerated, or high‑risk environments.
Applicants must demonstrate:
- At least one year of specialized experience in transportation, logistics, or a related field that directly relates to the duties of this position.
- Experience in determining economical rates and routes, classifying and routing commodities including hazardous materials.
- Background knowledge of transportation documentation, carrier selection, and shipment verification.
Work is largely sedentary but requires handling materials up to 25 lbs. May involve climbing ladders, working on safety pallets, and standing or bending for extended periods.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based with occasional visits to warehouses, secure areas, or outdoor locations. May involve exposure to chemicals, pesticides, low‑level radioactive material, or refrigerated areas (42‑45°F) and sub‑freezer temperatures. Appropriate safety clothing and equipment will be provided.
EducationEducation is not creditable beyond GS‑5 for most positions, but graduate education directly related to the position may be creditable. Prior education should be supported with transcripts. Foreign education must be evaluated for equivalency to an accredited U.S. program.
