EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I

The purpose of this classification is to drive/operate equipment in support of Parks & Recreation maintenance and construction projects. Work involves loading and unloading materials at work sites; and operating equipment and vehicles for assigned project tasks. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher‑level operator, foreman, or supervisor who closely monitors and inspects work while in progress and upon completion.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Drives and operates a variety of trucks and equipment such as bulldozers, tractors, dump trucks, etc.
• Conducts pre‑trip inspections; fuels trucks; loads and secures materials on trucks; spreads materials; and conducts post‑trip inspections.
• Operates tractors with mounted equipment such as a mower or broom, rollers, pavers, bobcats, and other motorized equipment.
• Operates small or light equipment such as chainsaws, jack hammers, hand, and power tools.
• Directs traffic and places markers, signs, and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public.
• Performs preventive maintenance and minor operator repairs on tools, equipment, and vehicles.

• May require the use of hand tools including rakes, shovels, posthole diggers, brooms, chippers, etc.
• May require operation of dump trucks to transport materials to and from the worksites.
• Participates as needed in efforts related to inclement weather conditions, natural disasters, and other emergency situations.
• Performs other related duties as required.

• High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience operating and driving equipment in support of maintenance projects; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
• Preferred candidates would possess a Georgia Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Physical Ability:
Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors:
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, or traffic hazards.
