Professional Bus Driver — Fixed Route Bus Operator Company Description

Role Description

MBCTA is seeking experienced Professional Bus Drivers / Fixed Route Bus Operators with a valid CDL and Passenger “P” endorsement.

This is an on-site driving position based in Macon, Georgia. Bus Operators are responsible for safely operating MBCTA transit vehicles on assigned routes and schedules while providing professional, courteous service to passengers. Drivers are expected to follow all traffic laws, agency policies, safety procedures, route instructions, and dispatch communications.

Daily responsibilities include operating a fixed-route transit bus, performing required pre-trip and post-trip inspections, maintaining schedule adherence where safely possible, assisting passengers as needed, communicating with dispatch, reporting incidents or service issues, and representing MBCTA in a professional manner while serving the public.

Key Responsibilities

Operate MBCTA transit vehicles safely and professionally on assigned fixed routes and schedules.

Perform required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.

Follow all applicable traffic laws, Federal Motor Carrier Safety requirements, agency rules, and operational procedures.

  • Provide courteous customer service to passengers, including answering basic route, stop, fare, and service questions.
  • Assist passengers with boarding and exiting as appropriate, including passengers using mobility devices.
  • Safely operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement equipment when required.
  • Communicate clearly with dispatchers, supervisors, and other agency personnel.
  • Collect, validate, or monitor fares according to MBCTA procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to service disruptions, passenger concerns, emergencies, accidents, or incidents.
  • Maintain accurate reports, logs, and documentation as required.
  • Represent MBCTA with professionalism, patience, and respect at all times.
Qualifications
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger “P” endorsement required.
  • Air brake endorsement preferred or required if applicable to assigned vehicle type.
  • Prior fixed-route, transit, shuttle, motorcoach, school bus, or other professional passenger-driving experience preferred, but not required.
  • Clean driving record and ability to meet MBCTA, DOT, and insurance requirements.
  • Ability to pass required background checks, drug and alcohol testing, and DOT medical requirements.
  • Strong safety awareness and sound judgment in traffic, weather, and passenger-service situations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, route schedules, maps, radio communications, and agency procedures.
  • Professional customer-service skills, including patience, dependability, and respectful communication with the public.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, inspect vehicles, board and exit transit vehicles, and assist passengers when needed.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Compensation and Benefits

Starting pay is $17.50 per hour minimum, based on experience.
