POSITION SUMMARY

The Med Surg Nurse Manager provides clinical and operational leadership and is accountable for the overall operation of the Medical-Surgical Department. This position oversees patient care, staffing, employee performance, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, patient safety, and staff development. The manager maintains a visible presence within the department, collaborates with physicians and other departments, and remains clinically engaged to support patient care and department operations when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Directs and manages daily clinical and operational activities of the Medical-Surgical Department.
  • Ensures safe, appropriate, and effective nursing care for Medical-Surgical patients.
  • Serves as a clinical resource and maintains an active and visible leadership presence within the department.
  • Develops staff schedules and monitors staffing, patient acuity, overtime, attendance, productivity, and appropriate use of department resources.
  • Assists with direct patient care and staffing when necessary to maintain safe department operations.
  • Participates in recruitment, interviewing, orientation, staff development, performance evaluations, coaching, counseling, and retention of department employees.
  • Establishes expectations for employee performance, attendance, conduct, documentation, and patient care and addresses concerns in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer and Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Ensures employee education, competencies, certifications, and required training remain current.
  • Ensures nursing care, documentation, and department practices comply with hospital policies, professional standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, Critical Access Hospital requirements, and other applicable regulations.
  • Participates in quality assurance, performance improvement, patient safety activities, incident review, regulatory surveys, and corrective action when indicated.
  • Collaborates with physicians, Case Management, ancillary departments, nursing leadership, patients, and families to coordinate care and address concerns.
  • Assists with development and review of nursing policies, procedures, standards of care, and department workflows.
  • Participates in nursing leadership meetings, hospital committees, and organizational initiatives as assigned.
  • Assists with department budgeting and monitors staffing, supply, and equipment resources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse license in Arkansas or current multistate license with privilege to practice in Arkansas.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Current PALS certification or must obtain within six months of hire.
  • Minimum of three years of acute-care nursing experience required, with Medical-Surgical experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous charge nurse, supervisory, or nursing leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment, leadership, communication, organizational, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of patient safety, quality improvement, nursing standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard computer applications used for communication, documentation, scheduling, data tracking, and department management.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively with physicians, staff, leadership, patients, families, and other departments.
