The nursing instructor is responsible for teaching in the classroom, campus laboratory, and clinical area on campus and/or at a satellite or off‑site campus/location. The successful candidate will be involved in collaborative teaching within his/her identified clinical specialty and at least one other content area. He/she will participate in division and college activities and will be responsible for maintaining high standards of quality and excellence in the classroom, clinical practice and laboratory instruction.
CoreCompetencies and Qualifications
- Current Unencumbered RN License from the State of Michigan required.
- Adjunct Clinical Instructors require BSN or higher from a regionally accredited institution in Nursing.
- Three years of medical‑surgical or specialty area nursing clinical experience required.
- Master of Science Degree in Nursing with a major or area of concentration in medical/surgical, obstetrics, psychiatric, or pediatric nursing preferred.
- Prior college/school of nursing classroom theory and clinical teaching in medical/surgical, pediatric, obstetric, or psychiatric nursing is desirable, but not required.
- Experience in curriculum revision, teaching innovation, ACEN accreditation process, course/program development, simulation, and use of current instructional technology is desirable. Experience with distance education is a plus.
- Uphold the best scholarly and ethical standards of his or her discipline.
- Make a reasonable effort to participate in professional development activities to implement effective teaching strategies that foster student learning.
- Foster honest academic conduct and ensure evaluations reflect each student’s performance.
- Demonstrate respect for students as individuals and foster a respectful atmosphere in the classroom or an online learning environment.
- Treat all students with respect and fairness without regard to protected statuses.
- Demonstrate mastery of course material, prepare all handouts, exams, or other materials before the start of class, and present the material conscientiously.
- Teach courses in accordance with the description in the Course Master and departmental or standardized course policies.
- Make himself or herself available for student consultations and provide guidance to promote student learning and success.
- Meet all scheduled classes and final examinations as scheduled.
- Grade and return written work to students in a timely manner. Maintain records of student attendance, intermediate, and final grades; submit required reports to the appropriate office by deadlines.
- Develop and distribute an effective course syllabus, following College policies and incorporating required elements of the course master; adhere to the written syllabus throughout the semester.
- Be informed of College support services for students and recommend their use when advisable.
- Make every reasonable effort to attend scheduled staff meetings.
- Behave appropriately in dealing with students and staff to maintain a scholarly and professional atmosphere.
- Notify the Associate Dean as soon as possible if unable to meet scheduled class sessions; schedule personal vacations to coincide with the College.
- Responsible for performing, analyzing, and reporting assessment of student learning.
