Academy of the Sacred Heart is seeking an energetic Science/Math teacher to join the Upper School faculty. This educator will design engaging, standards-aligned lessons and use a range of instructional strategies to support diverse learners. Teaching responsibilities may include Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Algebra I and other courses as assigned. Beyond the classroom, the teacher will contribute to the full life of the school through advising, co-curricular involvement, and ongoing professional growth, while building strong partnerships with students, colleagues, and families.

Functions
  • Collaborate with colleagues of diverse backgrounds on pedagogical approaches, curricular alignment and instructional strategies.
  • Develop lesson plans and select learning material and resources that facilitate mastery of academic standards.
  • Implement instructional priorities: clear expectations, consistent feedback, and relationship centered in every lesson.
  • Execute lessons efficiently using different styles of teaching depending on the content.
  • Analyze needs, interests, strengths, and weaknesses of students and differentiate instruction accordingly. Provide accommodations to students with building accommodation plans with the support of the Learning Support Coordinator.
  • Monitor student progress and shift expectations to promote academic growth.
  • Encourage collaborative teamwork in the classroom, teaching students to communicate effectively and thoughtfully, justify their reasoning and to consider multiple perspectives when solving problems. Engage students to ensure a lively classroom atmosphere.
  • Teach students to think critically and with an interdisciplinary mindset.
  • Invest in the life of the school by participating in the advisory program (mentor), social and emotional learning, weekly department meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings, and any and all aspects that support the student experience.
  • Serve as a moderator for each of the following: student clubs, class meetings, and experiential learning programs including weekly Community Service and Project Term.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior, including discretion, judgment and integrity.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and families.
  • Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.

The successful candidate should demonstrate passion and commitment to an interdisciplinary approach as well as source appropriate learning material and present varying viewpoints that allow students to feel safe and successful. A clear commitment to the Educational Philosophy of Sacred Heart Schools and the Goals and Criteria is essential.

Basic Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education;
    Science/Math 6-12
  • A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience
  • Strong interpersonal as well as written and verbal communication skills.
  • A desire to seek out professional development activities related to the latest instructional strategies, student growth and best pedagogical practices.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, and colleagues; willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the Sacred Heart community
  • Willingness to adapt to an existing curriculum as well as contribute ideas to enhance the respective academic programs
