Family Consumer Science Teacher

Comstock Park is seeking candidates who display a strong desire and ability to make an impact on students and the greater community both within and outside of the classroom. A Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) teacher instructs students on vital life skills like nutrition, culinary arts, personal finance, child development, and family resource management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Curriculum Delivery:
    Plan and execute engaging, hands‑on lessons aligned with the State of Michigan Family and Consumer Sciences (KH) Standards.
  • Maintain Compliance:
    Deliver state‑aligned health and reproductive health curricula in accordance with Michigan Department of Education (MDE) guidelines and district policy.
  • Life Skills Instruction:
    Teach students how to evaluate the interrelationship between economic systems, consumer behavior, and personal budgeting.
  • Classroom Management:
    Foster a safe, respectful learning environment, especially in lab settings like kitchens, encouraging student engagement and independent living skills.
  • Assessment:
    Develop formative and summative assessments to track and adjust student outcomes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, or a related field.
  • Required Certifications & Endorsements
    • KH Endorsement:
      Qualifies you to teach departmentalized human services and consumer science courses.
    • Standard Teaching Certificate:
      Requires a bachelor’s degree in education or Family and Consumer Sciences and passing the MTTC (Michigan Test for Teacher Certification).
    • CTE Requirements:
      Many Michigan districts require—or heavily prefer—a Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificate. If you do not have this, districts may require you to obtain an Annual Career Authorization, which typically requires 4,000 hours of recent industry experience.
  • Professional

    Skills:

    Strong organizational skills, technological proficiency for lesson delivery, and excellent interpersonal abilities to communicate with parents and school staff.

OTHER

SKILLS and ABILITIES

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.

The final candidate for this position will be required (at their cost) to furnish the district with a current Michigan State Police and FBI criminal records Live Scan check prior to our recommendation to hire.
