Overview
The project engineer will be responsible for leading technical development, integration, validation, and launch of instrument panel structures, ensuring safety, quality, and technical excellence throughout the vehicle development process. This role involves cross-functional collaboration and hands-on engineering tasks from early product definition to production launch.
Responsibilities
- Lead design, development, analysis, implementation, and validation of the instrument panel structure subsystem.
- Perform engineering design evaluations and concept development across vehicle programs.
- Utilize engineering tools such as DFMEA, ICDs, and PFMEA, and collaborate with CAE groups.
- Assess design to manufacturing processes including metal stamping, welding, casting, and hybrid injection molding.
- Package components and manage CAD development through suppliers or internal designers.
- Collaborate with other vehicle subsystems to ensure integrated design and execution.
- Ensure best practices are incorporated into CAD models and lead peer reviews of designs.
- Support initial vehicle configuration work, cost optimization, and implementation of product and process improvements.
- Drive change management processes and communicate effectively across teams and suppliers.
- Lead launch activities and support enterprise initiatives like virtual design and supply chain enhancements.
- Travel occasionally to support and follow critical activities at suppliers and client plants, mostly locally.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace, Materials, or related).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in instrument panel structure development with end-to-end exposure from product concept to launch.
- Experience with welded stamping assemblies and castings.
- Proficiency in vehicle integration, design for manufacturability, and CAD management.
- Strong knowledge of DFMEA, DRBFM, ICDs, PFMEA, and validation planning.
- Experience with CAE tools and design validation techniques.
- Effective project management skills; PMI/PMP certification preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-team collaboration.
- Proficiency in CAD workflows, MS Office suite, and visualization tools such as NX/Uni Graphics; experience in creating math models in NX is a plus.
- DFSS Green Belt and/or Black Belt certification.
- Experience working in manufacturing environments, particularly with metal stamping.
- Hands-on product development experience related to vehicle structures or similar systems.
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous or complex situations and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills.
