Senior Hardware Engineer – Network Technology and Design
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard — from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role:General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our Semiconductor / Semiconductor Technology Engineering team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on design and commercialization of leading-edge hardware enabling the future of GM’s vehicle architecture.
We are seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer to lead the hardware development of wired connectivity technology, including Serialize rs/Deserializers and Ethernet-based network solutions. This hardware engineer position is highly collaborative and depends on building strong partnerships with internal teams responsible for electronic control unit (ECU) design, as well as semiconductor partners. The role sits within the Network Technology and Design team in the compute and connectivity organization, reflecting GM’s growing need for hardware design ownership in this domain.
WhatYou’ll Do (Responsibilities):
Collaborate with cross-functional teams within software, mechanical, and manufacturing to ensure successful integration of network technologies into ECU electrical designs.
Perform detailed hardware analysis, including worst-case analysis, signal integrity, and power integrity, for Ser Des and Ethernet interfaces and related circuitry.
Troubleshoot hardware issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement robust, long-term solutions across ECUs and associated connectivity hardware.
Conduct design reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure high-quality, manufacturable designs that meet performance, safety, and reliability targets.
Develop hardware requirements and test specifications for Ser Des/Ethernet connectivity and supporting circuitry.
Develop a clear test strategy covering all aspects of development, from component and board-level validation through system integration and production readiness.
Lead bench test execution throughout the development lifecycle, including bring-up, characterization, and debug of prototype and production-intent hardware.
Establish domain expertise for semiconductors and ECU product lines within your scope of responsibility, with focus on wired connectivity technology (Ser Des and Ethernet PHYs, switches, and related components).
Manage technology roadmaps in close collaboration with industry leaders and semiconductor partners to ensure GM’s network hardware solutions remain on the forefront of performance, cost, and scalability.
