Salary

For salary, a pay step increase will be applied from the first working day at the police department.

New Hire Start $72,533 and top wage of $97,375 after 5 years.
2-5 Years of Experience will receive year 2 wages – $81,660
5+ Years of Experience Start at top wage of $95,000.

Requirements
  • Age 20 or older by the closing date of application
  • Possess a valid license to operate a vehicle in the State of Michigan with a driving record that meets police and fire civil service standards.
  • Must possess normal visual functions in each eye. Possess 20/20 corrected vision in each eye. Possess normal color vision
  • Must pass a physical examination including drug screening and a psychological evaluation within the guidelines established by the City, as modified by current law.
  • No felony convictions.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Must pass a background investigation
  • Must pass the written test administered through EMPCO Inc. within the past year with a score of 80 percent or higher, and the oral interview with a score of 80 percent or higher.
  • Applicants must score a minimum composite score of 80 percent on the written and oral examinations, with the examination weights of 70 percent for the written/practical exam and 30 percent for the oral board.
  • Applicants must create a profile, register and take the written exam to be administered by EMPCO Inc. Go to  to create a profile, register for the written exam and pay the exam fee. Applicants must complete the online profile and take the written exam by close of application period.
Preference Points
  • Two (2) points for Honorably Discharges Veteran with three (3)+ years of active military service experience or four (4)+ years of reserve military experience;
    Verified by DD214 or NGB
    22 submitted at time of application.
  • Two (2) points for bachelor’s degree or higher education in any field, or one (1) point for associate’s degree in any field;
    Verified by official sealed transcript submitted at time of application.
  • These preference points will be added to the composite score of those that pass both the written and oral examinations at 80% each.
Experience Requirements

All applicants must be either:

  • A current police officer, OR
  • MCOLES certified/certifiable, OR
  • Enrolled in an MCOLES approved academy, OR
  • Possess a valid MCOLES Pre-Employment Physical and Written exam by the date stipulated in the application period.

MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE)
A limited group of individuals, who have previous law enforcement training and/or experience, may seek eligibility for Michigan Law Enforcement Licensure through the Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE) program. A waiver of mandatory basic police training may be granted to a person who was previously a police officer in Michigan, in another state, or to a Michigan pre-service candidate who is seeking additional years of eligibility.

Out-of-state candidate applications for the RPTE program will not be accepted unless the candidate has completed at least one year of full-time, fully empowered, paid police service following his/her police training.
