Job Description – Project/Program Manager Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Project/Program Manager to join a growing team supporting utility infrastructure projects across Michigan. This role will be responsible for managing assigned projects within the Lines and Substations portfolio
, coordinating with cross-functional teams, removing project barriers, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in alignment with organizational goals.

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative hybrid environment and should be comfortable balancing office-based project management responsibilities with occasional field visits throughout Michigan.

Candidates may report to a Consumers Energy service center in one of the following locations:

  • Jackson, MI
  • Alma, MI
  • Grand Rapids, MI
  • Saginaw, MI
  • Lansing, MI
Hybrid Schedule
  • Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday onsite
  • Wednesday and Friday remote, subject to business needs
Travel
  • Projects are located throughout Michigan.
  • Occasional field visits are required to help identify and remove project barriers.
  • Team staff meetings are typically held every other month in Lansing or Jackson.
  • Attendance at the team’s "Rally Room" in Jackson is expected approximately every other week.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage projects within the assigned Lines and Substations portfolio
    .
  • Develop and maintain project plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, construction, field personnel, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively identify risks, issues, and potential delays.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to resolve project obstacles and remove barriers.
  • Conduct field visits as needed to assess project conditions and support project execution.
  • Communicate project status, risks, milestones, and key decisions to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Facilitate project meetings and ensure clear accountability for action items.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation in accordance with established processes and standards.
  • Support continuous improvement of project management processes and standard work.
  • Ensure projects are executed in accordance with applicable safety, quality, regulatory, and company requirements.

The position will join an organization of approximately 27 employees
, including four managers reporting to the current leader.

The organization is undergoing growth and leadership changes, including the hiring of a Senior Manager
. Once hired, these roles are expected to ultimately report through the new Senior Manager.

This position represents a backfill opportunity created as an augmented worker transitions into a full-time role.

Training & Onboarding

The selected candidate will receive structured training and onboarding, including:

  • Shadowing experienced team members
  • Reviewing standard work and process documentation
  • Learning the specific Lines and Substations portfolio they will manage
  • Gaining familiarity with internal processes, stakeholders, systems, and project requirements
Qualifications

Required/

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Project Management, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects or programs.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience coordinating multiple stakeholders and work streams.
  • Ability to identify project risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites throughout Michigan as needed.
  • Utility, energy, electrical, infrastructure, construction, or engineering project experience is highly desirable.
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a proactive project leader who can manage competing priorities, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and take ownership of resolving project challenges. Experience working in a utility or infrastructure environment is strongly preferred, particularly with electric transmission/distribution lines or substations
.

The candidate should be comfortable working in both office and field environments and be able to build strong relationships across engineering, operations, construction, and leadership teams.
