Position: Health Director-In-Residence (Camp Nurse)

The Health Director-In-Residence (DIR) operates under written standing orders signed by the Camp Physician. (ACA HW-8A, HW-11B). The Health Clinic team is comprised of one to three all-summer Health Officers with the support of a rotating Health DIR. The Health DIR role is designed to be filled by different staff each session as a licensed professional with more health experience. In collaboration with the Health Officers who focus on the day-to-day operations of the Clinic, the Health DIR uses their medical expertise to support sick call of campers and staff and oversee the accurate and precise management of camper medication storage and administration.

Specific Duties
  • Examines health forms and notifies unit leaders, counselors and specialist of children with accommodations or restrictions as appropriate and necessary.
  • Handles sick call after breakfast and dinner, using appropriate first aid techniques and following standing orders.
  • Acts as camp’s first responder during medical emergencies.
  • Maintains official medical documentation by recording every clinic visitor, staff and camper with support from Health Officers in our online camper records system, Camp Minder. (ACA HW-21)
  • Communicates with parents if and when:
    • A camper or minor staff member is confined to the clinic due to injury or illness for 12 hours or more, or when they miss significant camp and cabin activities.
    • A camper or minor staff member spends the night in the clinic.
    • A camper or minor staff member needs to see the Camp Physician or be taken to the Emergency Room.
    • A camper or minor staff member is injured while using Camp Echo’s equipment (i.e. horses, boats, bike, etc.)
  • Communicates with children’s physicians as needed.
  • Communicates with the local physician and health clinics in Fremont, Grant, or White Cloud as needed.
  • Supports completion of official reports of all incidents or injuries requiring professional medical treatment.
  • Supports the health-related protocols of Adventure Trips
  • Collaborates with Mental Wellness Team when campers or staff present with mental, emotional, or social health needs.
  • Accompanies campers to hospital/urgent care in emergency situations.
  • Schedules follow up/specialist appointments for campers and staff, as needed.
  • Supports navigation of the US medical system for adult staff, international and domestic, as appropriate.
Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 21 with a valid US driver’s license and clean driving record per insurance requirements for camp drivers.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certified.
  • 4+ years experience working with youth in a mental health or social work capacity, preferably in a camp or school setting.
  • Licensed MD, RN, LPN or similar medical license.
  • Leadership ability and teamwork oriented.
  • Three years clinical experience preferred.
  • A commitment to working with a diverse staff and camper population for the fulfillment of YMCA goals
Responsibilities of All Camp Echo Staff
  • Models, teaches, and upholds the Camp Echo Code of Conduct and protects the well‑being of all campers and staff.
  • Reports any behavior that goes against the Camp Echo Code of Conduct and/or puts any camper or staff at emotional or physical risk.
  • Aids in the development and education of Teen Leadership program participants.
  • Maintains positive relationships with campers and other staff.
  • Encourages physical, emotional, and spiritual growth and positive character development in all campers.
  • Practices cultural humility, striving to actively learn about and be sensitive to cultures different than their own.
  • Is a team player, helping others to achieve their potential by enthusiastically saying “yes” when asked to help.
  • Takes initiative and strives to be an active participant in creating positive programs and spaces at camp.
  • Cares for and maintains any program equipment, supplies, and spaces they use including activity areas (keeping track of keys) and any shared spaces like the offices, Costume Closet and Program Office.
  • Handles whatever else is necessary to ensure that programs run smoothly and safely, or anything else that is deemed necessary by supervisors.
