Job Overview
Position: PREA Specialist in the PREA Investigations Unit at the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Work Locations (Region1)

- MARQUETTE BRANCH PRISON
- ALGER CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
- NEWBERRY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
- CHIPPEWA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
- KINROSS CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
- Maintain the integrity and professional excellence of the MDOC PREA program.
- Ensure timely and thorough investigations of allegations of employee and prisoner sexual abuse and sexual harassment.
- Provide training and guidance to PREA coordinators and supervisory staff.
- Conduct highly complex investigations of alleged PREA violations within the region.
- Bachelor’s degree in any major.
- For Corrections Investigative Officer 12:
Three years of experience conducting broad-based criminal investigations or employee disciplinary investigations, including one year equivalent to a Corrections Investigative Officer P11. - For Corrections Investigative Specialist 13:
Four years of experience conducting broad-based criminal investigations or employee disciplinary investigations, including two years equivalent to a Corrections Investigative Officer P11 or one year equivalent to a Corrections Investigative Officer 12. - Alternate Experience for Specialist 13:
Six years of experience conducting broad-based criminal investigations or employee disciplinary investigations; or five years as a Corrections Shift Supervisor 13 or Corrections Security Inspector 13; or a bachelor’s degree and three years as a Corrections Shift Supervisor 13 or Corrections Security Inspector 13.
- Knowledge of PREA standards, investigative methods and techniques.
- Ability to conduct investigations, analyze findings, and prepare detailed reports.
- Knowledge of interviewing techniques and effective probative interviewing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and computer use; typing ability.
- Strong analytical and observational skills; ability to determine appropriate actions.
- Knowledge of laws, statutes, contracts, policies, and procedures related to the work; record-keeping systems.
- Ability to maintain records, prepare reports, and handle confidential information.
- Effective interpersonal communication and self-motivated, independent work habits.
- Capability to provide testimony in court and administrative hearings.
- Positions are subject to pre-appointment and random-selection drug and alcohol testing.
- Willingness to undergo a thorough background investigation.
- No criminal record that would prohibit possession or carrying of a firearm or acquisition of a concealed weapons permit.
- Possession of a valid Michigan operator’s or chauffeur’s license.
- Felony or misdemeanor convictions may result in disqualification, pending satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation.
New hires and returning employees who have been away for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) and additional online training as required.
