PCSI is seeking a Pipefitter to join its Mechanical department. Responsibilities include installation, repairs, and maintenance of high‑pressure steam, hydronic heat, chilled water, and plumbing systems across a military facility. This role involves reviewing as‑built drawings, fabricating and assembling pipe, troubleshooting system issues, and testing systems to ensure safe and efficient operation while following established safety standards. The position requires formal apprenticeship training or equivalent experience and the ability to work independently in physically demanding indoor and outdoor environments.

This position will report to the Mechanical Supervisor and is based at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, MI.

Typical shift

Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm

Rate of Pay

$50.00 per hour plus Health & Welfare (union shop), full benefits

This position is part of a 5‑person plumbing/pipe fitting shop executing a facility operations & maintenance (O&M) and repair contract, consisting of 55 buildings comprising nearly two million square feet of space and roads and grounds maintenance of approximately 170 acres on a military installation.

Responsibilities
  • Laying out work and measuring to locate the position of pipe from drawings or other written specifications, cutting various sizes of pipe to correct lengths, using oxyacetylene torch or pipe cutting machines, and threading pipe with stocks and dies.
  • Assembling pipe with couplings and fastening pipe to hangers, making standard shop computations relating to pressures, flow, and size of pipe required; making standard tests to determine whether the finished pipe meets specifications.
  • Knowledge in the repair of steam systems up to 125lbs, including control valves, expansion joints, condensate pumps, steam traps, etc.
  • Knowledge in repairs and function of hydronic heating systems, including valves, pumps, and heat exchangers.
  • Repair of chilled water systems.
  • Install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, and test steam compressed air, water, natural gas, hydraulic fluids, and maintain plumbing and heating equipment and facilities related to shop equipment.
  • Install, modify, and repair new and existing high‑pressure piping systems and equipment, such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, steam generators, boilers, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators. Plans and lay out the installation, repair, and modification of high‑pressure piping systems and equipment, applying and interpreting information from blueprints, charts, and sketches.
  • Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations, and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Being on call for after‑hours emergency calls on a scheduled rotating basis.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bona fide formal apprenticeship or 8 years of equivalent training and experience required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of high‑pressure piping systems and equipment, such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators.
  • Skill in troubleshooting/inspecting piping systems to identify irregularities and existing and/or potential problems and system malfunctions.
