Join the Charter Township of Redford as a Utility Worker II
Under general supervision, individuals in this classification perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance, repair, installation, and construction of the water distribution and sewer collection pipeline system and associated areas. Assist and perform work in the installation, maintenance and repair of water and sewer pipelines, services, appurtenances, fire hydrants and other system facilities.
Rate of Pay: $25.69 to $31.74 hourly
FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt / Full Time
Reports To: DPS Director or Designee
Partial paid benefits including health insurance, defined benefit pension, paid vacation, paid sick leave and 14 paid holidays.
Essential Job Functions- Install, service, and repair water and sewer lines, including mains, laterals, valves, fittings, hydrants, and backflow prevention devices.
- Diagnose and repair service leaks and operate main line valves and hydrants.
- Dig trenches for the installation of utility infrastructure.
- Operate pneumatic, hand, and powered tools to perform installations and repairs.
- Collect water meter readings and replace, repair, or rebuild meters and related collection equipment.
- Complete service orders for activating/deactivating water services and testing water meters.
- Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair stormwater grates and pump systems.
- Operate heavy equipment and machinery (e.g., backhoes, trucks, sewer cleaners) in a safe and efficient manner.
- Operate dump trucks to transport materials such as debris, mud, and backfill to and from work sites.
- Enter confined spaces in accordance with MIOSHA standards to inspect or repair water/sewer systems.
- Use underground locator devices to mark existing utility infrastructure (pipes, valves, manholes).
- Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, system diagrams, and work orders to guide work.
- Perform maintenance tasks to ensure the continued operation of water and sewer lines.
- Repair valve boxes, tap water mains, monitor chlorine residuals, collect water samples, and inspect/clean sewer lines and manholes.
- Conduct CCTV survey inspections of sewer systems.
- Perform regular sanitary manhole inspections (weekly/monthly).
- Conduct acoustic inspections on the sewer collection system.
- Repair and rebuild manholes and related underground structures.
- Respond to customer questions or concerns and refer them to the appropriate supervisor.
- Perform landscaping or site restoration duties as needed following excavation or utility work.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required to support department operations.
- High school diploma / GED.
- One year of working experience.
- Valid State of Michigan driver’s license with five or fewer points and a satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
- Must obtain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 90 days of employment.
- CDL shall have a Group A or B designation / Air Brake and Tanker (N) endorsements.
- CDL shall remain current throughout course of employment.
- Must be able to lift and carry heavy, bulky tools, equipment and other items weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
- May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, fluids, bodily waste and other materials.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
- Physical agility and mobility are required to work on uneven ground, in construction areas, trenches of various depths, and subterranean structures.
- Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the operation and use of motorized vehicles and other equipment.
- Frequently exposed to risks associated with traffic and moving vehicles.
- Ability to critically assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and to understand and carry out oral instructions.
- Assist in the training of others in the safe operation of tools and equipment.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgement, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with employees, project contractors, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, other township…
