Journeyman Machine Repairman Job Description
This role focuses on comprehensive machine repair and industrial maintenance within a manufacturing environment. You will troubleshoot, tear down, rebuild, and install a wide range of machinery, including CNC equipment, metal stamping presses, plastic injection machines, steel and plastic processing equipment, and grinding machines. The position involves working on motors, valves, pumps, gears, hydraulics, pneumatics, chains, grinders, and automation systems, as well as performing general millwright duties and equipment maintenance.
You will partner closely with a Journeyman Electrician, contribute to projects at various industrial sites, and handle rigging and welding tasks as needed.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair a variety of manufacturing machinery, including CNC, metal stamping, plastic injection, steel and plastic processing, and grinding equipment.
- Perform complete machine tear downs, rebuilds, and installations to ensure reliable and efficient operation.
- Conduct repairs and maintenance on motors, valves, pumps, gears, hydraulics, pneumatics, chains, grinders, and automation systems.
- Carry out general millwright and industrial maintenance tasks on equipment in large manufacturing facilities.
- Rig and move machinery safely when required, supporting equipment relocations and installations.
- Work on different machines and equipment regularly rather than servicing the same unit each day.
- Collaborate closely with a Journeyman Electrician to coordinate mechanical and electrical work on projects.
- Support maintenance activities on industrial sites, including relocating and replacing equipment for 70–80% of the time.
- Assist with installation and construction work for new equipment, expansions, and new buildings for the remaining portion of time.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with team members and site personnel in a union facility environment.
- Remain open to working approximately one weekend per month to provide coverage as needed.
- Travel to various project sites, primarily during the week, and participate in on-site work as part of a field-based team.
- Meet at the shop in the morning to ride to job sites with the foreman, or meet at nearby job locations when appropriate.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures while working in large industrial facilities.
- Utilize welding skills when required to support repairs, installations, and equipment modifications.
- Proven experience in machine repair within industrial or manufacturing environments.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical systems and production equipment.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand and work on complex machinery.
- Hands-on experience with hydraulics and pneumatic systems, including repair and maintenance.
- Experience in rigging machinery and safely moving equipment.
- Ability to perform industrial maintenance and general millwright duties.
- Capability to work effectively in partnership with a Journeyman Electrician on joint projects.
- Willingness to work approximately one weekend per month for coverage.
- Comfort with traveling to project sites for a significant portion of the year.
- Effective communication skills, especially in a union facility environment.
Skills & Qualifications
- Journeyman card in a relevant mechanical trade is a plus.
- Welding experience is highly desirable and considered a strong asset.
- Experience working in large industrial facilities performing maintenance and equipment relocations.
- Experience in installation and construction of new equipment, expansions, or new buildings.
- Ability to progress into a foreman-level role after demonstrating capability during the initial training period.
