Position: Registered Polysomnography Tech - Sleep Lab - Howland Sleep Center (PRN)

This is a PRN "As Needed" Position Primary Function / General Purpose Of Position

The Registered Polysomnography Tech (RPSGT or RST) works under the supervision of the Sleep Center leadership team to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This involves polysomnography, diagnostic, and therapeutic services regarding patient care or education.

Essential Job Functions
  • Prepare the patient, explain the procedure, review clinical data from the patient medical record and interview, and base testing modalities on information obtained; operate polysomnographic equipment to obtain diagnostic recordings following established protocols while manually controlling the equipment to obtain the requested pertinent waveforms from the area being studied; decipher normal from abnormal results to obtain appropriate or additional tests which demonstrate the abnormality.
  • Document detailed, accurate technical reports to aid physicians in interpretation of test data; review studies with physicians to clarify any discrepancies and perform additional testing when necessary.
  • Administer various neurodiagnostic procedures without direct supervision while utilizing the appropriate protocols; monitor the quality of tests being conducted while ensuring prudent resource management; follow hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Maintain a clean work area.
  • Help coordinate patient scheduling, receive patient payments, review patient charges, and assist with general office tasks.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and remain current in the neurodiagnostic field by maintaining continuing education requirements.
  • Perform sleep staging and event scoring per American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines to decipher normal from abnormal results. May perform monthly Interscorer Reliability QA and reporting depending upon departmental need.
  • Troubleshoot all polysomnographic and office equipment.
Licensing / Certification

• BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, required before patient care).

• Polysomnography State Licensure if applicable based upon state of practice (preferred).

Must Have One Of The Following (required)
  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.
  • Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) Certification by the American Board of Sleep Medicine.
  • Licensed Respiratory Therapist (RT) in state of practice – Sleep Disorder Specialist (SDS) credential (required for RT).
Education

High school diploma or equivalent (required).

Work Experience

At least one year of previous experience in neurophysiology or sleep disorders medicine (preferred).

  • Adolescents (13-17 years)
  • Adults (18-64 years)
  • Geriatrics (65 years and older)
Working Conditions
  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
  • May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse.
  • May have periods of constant interruptions.
  • May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
  • General office environment.
  • May be required to car travel to alternative locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Prolonged periods of working alone.
  • Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
