Job Details: The Polysomnographic Technologist is a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) with expert skills in conducting sleep studies, sleep staging and technical scoring of sleep events according to the AASM standards. He/she works closely with the ambulatory supervisor, manager, Chief Medical Director to assure quality diagnostic and therapeutic services in the Sleep Lab. Provides excellent patient experience by following policies, procedures and protocols and hospital values.

Professional duties include patient assessment to determine patient specific needs, comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including polysomnography, extended EEG, MSLT/MWT, application and titration of oxygen,CPAP/BiPAP, blood gas sampling and analysis and patient/family education.

The RPSGT also assists in mentoring staff and orienting and supervising new sleep technicians, scoring and staging studies, calibrating and troubleshooting equipment problems, supporting and implementation of new testing modalities. Provides coverage as needed.

Polysomnographic Technologist

To perform physician ordered diagnostic testing related to sleep. Arrive and register patients as needed. Complete all required documentation in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

Performs Multiple Sleep Latency Test, Maintenance of Wakefulness test, Parasomnia studies, PAP, Oxygen titration and collect appropriate data and compile for reading physician. Implements appropriate intervention necessary for the safety of the patients and therapeutic interventions such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressures and oxygen administration.
Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper function. Notify Clinical Eng if service is required.
Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted standards. Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments as necessary.
Explains pre-testing, testing, post-testing procedures to patients in a form and manner necessary to demonstrate education.
Arrives, registers, and discharges patients and performs all required documentation.
Follows "light out'& "light on" procedures to establish and document base line values. Documents routine observations that meet standards and guidelines.
Scoring sleep studies, if within scope of practice and with necessary certifications (RST, RPSGT, or SDS).
All other duties assigned.

Qualifications

SKILLS:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Registered Technologists in the sleep medicine field

Polysomnographic Technologists and Scoring Technologists.

LICENSES &

CERTIFICATIONS:


Certification by a nationally recognized certification board and the Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential required if Technologist will be scoring sleep studies. Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) credentials required if Technologist will not be scoring sleep studies.
