Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. is in need of a dedicated and detail‑oriented Dockworker to ensure the safe, efficient loading and unloading of freight, supporting overall warehouse and material handling operations.

Job Summary

The Dockworker must efficiently load and unload freight, ensuring correct items are placed on the right trucks. Safety is paramount; dock workers use forklifts, pallet jacks, and manual techniques to handle materials. Proper securing of freight with airbags, cardboard, straps, and other equipment is crucial to prevent damage during transport. The role directly impacts the reliability of deliveries to customers.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manually in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines.
  • Employ various loading techniques, such as tight loading and cross‑loading.
  • Transport freight continuously throughout the service center on non‑forgiving surfaces.
  • Use Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations.
  • Read and interpret shipping labels and complete necessary freight movement forms (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage reports, exception forms).
  • Hand‑load, rewrap, or stack freight as required.
  • Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, ropes, and other appropriate supplies.
  • Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel; work in a fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented environment.
Job Qualifications
  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Experience with safe lifting and transporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of loading techniques such as tight and cross loading.
  • Ability to complete freight movement forms and use the dock yard management system.
  • Availability to work at all times as required to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
  • Proficiency in operating handheld tablets when needed.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English. (

    "English" is a required language skill.)
Physical Demands
  • Remain standing for up to 8 hours per shift on non‑forgiving surfaces (concrete, wood, metal).
  • Sit on a forklift up to 8 hours per shift.
  • Walk up to 8 hours a day on wet, slippery, or non‑forgiving surfaces.
  • Perform frequent squatting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing to handle, position, and secure freight.
  • Load and unload trailers weighing up to 500 lbs., including moving containers, drums, tires, and cartons.
  • Frequently pull and push freight up to 100 lbs.; push forklift components as needed.
  • Reach for freight and equipment at waist, shoulder, or lower levels; maintain clear work areas free of debris.
  • Lift objects up to 100 lbs. using proper OSHA lifting techniques; handle distances up to 100 feet.
  • Perform cognitive tasks such as inspecting areas, recognizing signs, and making decisions based on manifests and tablet data.
  • Work in varying temperatures and noise levels; adapt to hot or cold climates, and noisy or odorous environments.
  • Maintain attendance requirements.
Work Environment

Work may involve exposure to weather, noise, lighting variations, and confined spaces. Situations include loading/unloading in trailers, operating forklifts, and manipulating freight in high‑traffic areas. The role may require shifts and days that vary with customer schedules.
