A Blend of Structure and Autonomy
Graduate teaching assistants are provided with a great deal of structure while also having autonomy in the creation and delivery of daily content. COMM 1000 utilizes differentiated experiential learning activities for the mastery of the speechmaking process for all sections of the course. This approach provides our graduate teaching assistants with structured classroom learning experiences alongside creative autonomy as they grow in their teaching practice.

Graduate teaching assistants in the Department of Communication teach COMM 1000, Public Speaking, under the supervision of the Basic Course Director. The Department has both full-time and half-time positions available. Graduate teaching assistants facilitate all facets of course management including: preparation and planning of course lectures, development of learning activities, and the facilitation and evaluation of student presentations. Teaching Assistants follow the provided course syllabus and schedule, including utilizing the common major assessments.

Additionally, all graduate teaching assistants are required to enroll in one 1-credit course (Teaching Public Speaking and Design and Assessment) during their first semester as a teaching assistant as part of their graduate program.

Typical Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor 0s Degree Required
  • Currently admitted to a UCM graduate degree program
  • 3.0 or higher graduate-level GPA if previous graduate-level courses have been taken
  • 2.7 or higher undergraduate-level GPA if no previous graduate-level courses have been taken
  • Once a position is appointed, a minimum of 6 graduate credits must be taken for fall/spring semesters and 3 graduate credits during summer, while maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher, at UCM.

    Monday - Friday, 20 hours a week
  • Scholarship: Students filling a Graduate Assistantship (GA) position are eligible to receive a graduate tuition waiver, a graduate non-resident tuition waiver (if applicable), and a graduate mandatory fees waiver. The scholarships are in the form of a waiver and the funds are not deposited into the student personal account. Instead, the student bill is reduced by the amount of the scholarship awarded.

    If the maximum amount of the scholarship is not used, the remainder is not paid to the student in any form and unused scholarship money cannot be carried over to another semester. The scholarship is applied to graduate level courses only; courses taken for undergraduate credit are not eligible to be covered by the GA scholarship. The non-resident fee scholarship only applies to classes taken on the UCM Warrensburg campus.

    The maximum scholarship amounts are based on the size of assistantship held. For a full (20-hour per week) assistantship, the scholarship covers tuition costs and mandatory fees up to 12 credit hours of graduate coursework per semester. Graduate assistantship positions less than full will be prorated accordingly.

  • Part-time benefits-eligible positions: Benefits include generous education assistance for the employee.
  • Temporary, adjunct, student employment, or graduate assistant positions: Benefits are not included.
